Making Friendship Bracelets Tie Friends Together With Bright Colors, Patterns And Create Memories

In a different time in my life, Christmas crafts were an important part of my Christmas holiday. The past couple of years have been extremely hectic and some old traditions were put aside. This year my daughter asked me to help her with a party for her best girlfriends and we decided that we would teach them how to make friendship bracelets.

So she and I have been making lots of plans for a day of crafts, great munchies, and an opportunity for young girlfriends to make gifts for each other that might possibly become a warm and happy friendship memory.

My family moved to a new town when I was 10 - the age my daughter is now. I entered the 4th grade lonely and a bit apprehensive. At Christmas time one of the girls in my class presented me with a friendship bracelet and that started a friendship that has lasted 25 years.

Friendships between little girls are very precious. That gracious homemade gift broke the ice and my friend and I have giggled together, told secrets and shared heartaches for 25 years. Christmas holiday that year I spent time at her home and she taught me how to make friendship bracelets. This year I'm passing that to my daughter and her friends.

So, we bought colorful yarn (or floss), and she and I have already made a couple so that we can show how pretty they are. There is nothing like working on a project together. I expect the house to be full of girly chatter and laughter, and I can't wait.

My dear friend lives across the country from me, now. We talk by phone very often but I miss her. So, this year, I'm sending her a friendship bracelet - I'm honoring her gift of 25 years ago. This time the friendship bracelet will be one for an adult woman - sterling silver - sitting in a pretty blue box and sent with love and gratitude across the country.

Making a friendship bracelet is inexpensive, relatively simple and fun. Here are some basic instructions - BFF!(best friend forever) Share with a friend.

Things You'll Need
Clipboards
Yardsticks
Scissors
Embroidery Floss
Beads

Step One

Select two colors of embroidery floss for your friendship bracelet.

Step Two

Cut three 27-inch strands of each color to make a total of six strands.

Step Three

Hold the ends of all six strands together and make a knot about 1 inch from one end.

Step Four

Secure the knotted end by clipping it on a clipboard.

Step Five
Separate the colors so you have three strands of one color on the right and three strands of the other color on the left.

Step Six

Pick up the three strands on the left.

Step Seven

Wrap them over and under all three strands on the right, forming a loop.

Step Eight

Poke the strands through the loop and pull tight, forming a single knot.

Step Nine

Pick up the three strands on the right.

Step Ten

Wrap them over and under the strands on the left, forming a loop.

Step Eleven

Poke the strands through the loop and pull tight, forming a knot.

Step Twelve

Repeat steps 6 through 11 until your bracelet is the desired length.

Step Thirteen

Hold the ends of the strands together and make a knot.

Step Fourteen

Trim the ends to about 1 inch.

Step Fifteen

Try on your friendship bracelet.

Tips & Warnings

Select colors that have special significance to you and your friend - your friend's and your favorite colors, the colors of your eyes, or the colors of your birthstones make good choices. Make specially colored holiday friendship bracelets - pink and red for Valentine's Day; black and orange for Halloween; or black, red and green for Kwanzaa.

Add beads to your friendship bracelet by threading them through the two middle strands. Beads are a choking hazard for young children.

A Hobbyist's Guide To Stamp Collecting Supplies

Stamp collecting is a life-long hobby for art enthusiasts, traders and hobbyists alike. Much depends upon the quality of the stamps and to preserve your collection, you'll also need some stamp collecting supplies.

Archival stockbooks, stamp albums and computer organizer software are stamp collecting supplies that help collectors organize, maintain and protect the stamps. Archival stockbooks are made up of stiff pages with pockets where stamps can be set, without using any kind of hinge or adhesive. This can be good for the person who likes to rearrange or find an inexpensive option for keeping duplicate or lesser important stamps.

The best option for professional hobbyists looking to maintain more valuable stamps is an album -- either pre-printed or blank. Kids and beginners often love the pre-printed albums because they provide informative descriptions about particular stamps and give them something to aspire to with their collection.

Online software is good for traders. It's advisable to look for programs that will scan and separate a full sheet into individual files, since this is a great time saver.

The next thing to purchase facilitates the affixing of the stamps into your album. Stamp Hinges are small rectangular pieces of paper coated with a sticky gum. Collectors are encouraged to buy "peel-able" hinges to prevent damaging hinge marks on them. After lightly moistening the hinge, affix the short end to it and the long end to the page, which will allow interested buyers to examine the back of the stamp without completely unsticking it.

Collectors should never use glue or tape to affix them! In fact, unhinged ones are ideal but exceedingly rare. Metal Stamp Tongs are used by philatelists to hold them without getting finger oils on them.

Varieties include length (ranging from 4-8 inches) and tip (shovel or pointed). Pointed tips are great for intricate positioning but can also tear the stamp so the shovel tips are more practical.

The third category of supplies deals with examination. A Magnifying Glass (with a lens power of 3-4) reveals subtle imprints, color and watermarks. Serious philatelists will purchase a Perforation Gauge and a Watermark Detector to really get a good look. Perforation Gauges measure the holes between two or more of them, which can sometimes reveal a rare stamp from an ordinary one, or a unique stamp from one a collector already has in his or her collection.

It is used by sliding the gauge along a stamp and reading the "perf number" once the holes are aligned. A Watermark Detector will alert collectors to unique markings, rare ones or even clever forgery attempts. Just like money, stamps have hidden designs, invisible to the naked eye, that guarantee authenticity. Some collectors choose to use black trays and Benzine droppers to view watermarks.

The last category is informational. Magazines, books and catalogs can be a great source of knowledge as to what the market offers and how one's collection stacks up. The stories regarding many of them is rather amazing and can make a great archival paragraph to keep in the collection!

Stamp collecting supplies are crucial regardless of whether you are a beginner buying the first album, hinges and magnifying glass -- or a professional purchasing a perforation gauge, watermark detector and collecting software.

Windy Valley Muskox Yarn And My Lace Knitting Project

I've been knitting all my life and have acquired many knitting books along the way. My latest buy is Arctic Lace by Donna Druchunas. This wonderful book is a step by step introduction to knitting and designing lace. Of special interest is the use of Muskox yarn. So, after purchasing some from Windy Valley Muskox Yarn I set about learning how to use this wondrous fiber to create a lace shawl.

Reading this book - and Donna's blog - is an insight into a world of lace makers in Alaska - a place few of us will ever venture to. You learn about the Yup'ik and Inupiat people, their villages and the muskox. I learned about how each village and town has its own lace pattern that is incorporated into the garments and about the Oomingmak Co-op that helps to promote traditional lacework using muskox yarn.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the muskox, it is an animal found in the Arctic Circle. The fiber that is gathered from the animal is called qiviut. Gathered is the right word because the wool from the muskox is not sheered, like the wool from sheep; rather, qiviut is brushed off the animal when it naturally sheds its coat. Qiviut is one of the warmest, lightest and softest of fibers you can work with; it's the downy-soft underside wool from the musk ox - oomingmak - umimmak in Greenlandic. Because of its rarity and the way the wool is harvested, qiviut is very expensive.

I bought my qiviut from Windy Valley Muskox Yarn. It was a 100% pure qiviut yarn; the color is called Alaska Spruce. It's a 1 oz lace weight and you get about 218 yards per ball. I choose pure qiviut but you can also get qiviut/merino/silk and qiviut/silk blends in gorgeous colors from Windy Valley Muskox Yarn. If you've never worked with qiviut before you should be aware that it lacks the elasticity of wool, so it drapes beautifully for shawls and scarves but isn't ideal for sweaters and such like. And, it doesn't have the lustrous look of merino wool. With the qiviut/wool blends you get a yarn that holds its shape, feels incredibly soft and has a luxurious look to it. Also, qiviut blooms after it's been washed; you get a fuzzy halo that resembles mohair but is much softer.

The Arctic Lace book is a great teaching aid - even if you've never done lace work before or don't intend to use qiviut. As well as teaching the reader about the muskox, the people who work the fiber, the Oomingmak Co-op, you also can follow a list of projects. For my project I chose the 'Arctic Diamond Stole'. I made 8 repeats and after blocking it turned out quite large but light as a feather. It hangs around my shoulders a treat with a softness that has to be felt to be believed. Someone I know said that my qiviut shawl feels like putting your hands into a cloud. I think that's the best way to describe how it feels.

I've really enjoyed reading the Arctic Lace book and working with qiviut yarn. I've put the book down for now but know I'll soon return to begin another project - making lace gloves - and I already know which yarn I'll be using from Windy Valley Muskox Yarn; the Qiviut Royal Blend - 50/50 blend of qiviut and mulberry silk handspun in Peru - pure indulgence but you only live once.

Use Turmeric To Make Your Own Hand Dyed Yarn

Making your own hand dyed yarn can be fun, rewarding and cheap. It's not that difficult to make either, and with a little practice, you'll making yarn that is beautiful and unique. Here's a recipe using turmeric.

This dye is made from turmeric which you can buy at your local supermarket. Dye made from turmeric with give your wool a lovely brownish/yellow color. On cotton the color will be more like ochre.

First thing to do is to select your yarn that is to be hand dyed. Different fibers take dye differently. All-wool yarn takes on color much more easily than other fibers whereas cotton takes on very subtle, pastel shades when hand dyed. You'll find that using the same dye on a wool fiber and a cotton fiber can produce fibers of differing colors.

All you need to dye yarn is what you'll find in the kitchen. In fact, dyeing yarn was once very common in many households and was usually done in the kitchen or wash house. The following items are what you'll need.

1. A sharp knife and chopping board.
2. You need pots. Don't use those coated with anti-stick materials. Use an old stainless pot.
3. A stove.
4. A timer such as a clock. The timer has to time over a long period of time.
5. A pair tongs or spoons to handle the yarn. If you plan on dying different colors at the same time, you'll need another pair of spoons to avoid accidentally mixing colors.
6. You need a chair or something else for drying your yarn.
7. Take detailed notes so you to repeat the process at a later date.

Making the turmeric dye.

This quantity is enough to make 2 balls of wool or cotton: 1 oz of ground turmeric, 3 quarts water.

Bring the mixture to the boil and stir gently. Simmer for 30 minutes.

Bundle the yarn for dying into a hank. The dye needs to be able to mix freely, so make sure to loop the yarn loosely but also make sure it's secured so it does not tangle; this is important as you don't want to be spending a lot of time untangling it when it's wet. Wool yarn will felt together if moved during the drying period, so is crucial that you bundle it. Making the bundles is easy:

Wind the yarn into a large loop. Try wrapping it around the back of a chair or by wrapping it around your forearm from your fingers or under your elbow and back up again.

Tie the yarn loosely it in two places using short sections.

Double the loop if your pot is small. This is done by twisting it into a smaller circle and tying it with two more short pieces of yarn.

Bring the bath to boil.

You want to dampen the yarn by dipping it in water and wringing it out well. This is important as it helps the dye spread smoothly through the yarn.

Place the yarn in the dye bath.

Cook the yarn for 30 minutes. If the water evaporates so that the yarn is not covered, add more water.

The longer you leave the yarn the more color it takes. You can test the color by taking a small section and rinsing it. If you like the color then you remove all of the yarn or else let it boil for longer.

When the yarn is finished simmering, remove it from the bath and rinse it in cool water until the water runs clear. KEEP the dye bath until the yarn has dried completely and you know you are satisfied with the color. Importantly, you should rinse the yarn using soap as well as water. It's better to find out that your yarn is not color-fast now than later when you've made it into something.

Gently ring out the yarn.

Cut the second set of ties on the yarn, but leave the first ones in so that the yarn is in a big loop.

If you are dying wool, put it back on chair, rewind it into a ball and then rewind it back into its loop. This is because some of the strands may have felted together slightly. The winding process will unfelt fibers that felted; it's much easier to do this when it's damp.

Hang up the yarn and let it drip-dry.

Review of the Hidden Secrets Of Needlework

I hope this article brings to those who appreciate the real value, the joys of creating pretty and exquisite pieces of work from vintage, old-fashioned craft patterns.

With the introduction of machinery to produce items that used to be created by hand, the life and soul of these products have been lost. I find the satisfaction of producing these items by hand is something that cannot be compared. Also society has been over run and inundated these perfectly reproduced garbage they no longer appreciate the beauty of hand crafted items.

In the late 19th century a design reform and social movement "The Arts and Crafts movement" was coined. These activities are called crafts because originally many of them were professions under the guild system. The Industrial Revolution and the increasing mechanisation of production processes gradually reduced or eliminated many of the roles professional craftspeople played, and today 'crafts' are most commonly seen as a form of hobby or art. They look hard but they are actually an easy craft project to make.

Some crafts have been practised for centuries, while others are modern inventions, or popularisations of crafts which were originally practised in a very small geographic area. These activities are called crafts because originally many of them were professions under the guild system. Most crafts require a combination of skill, speed, and patience, but they can also be learnt on a more basic level by virtually anyone.

Anything that uses a needle for construction can be called needlework. Needlework is a term applied to two classes of handcraft involving fabrics. Embroidery was being done long before its name was derived, by way of medieval French from the Anglo-Saxon word for "edge. The first, embroidery, is the embellishment of a fabric by designs worked in thread with a needle. Some embroidery techniques produce a basically flat surface; others produce designs in relief.

Antique crochet has enormous character which is displayed in various forms and styles and so antique patterns are sought after by those looking to recreate classic items from a past era. Fortunately there were a lot of books, magazines and patterns published between 1850 and 1950 that have preserved the diversity of crochet creations that represent the peak period of this craft.

Tapestry art was even thought to have covered the walls of the Parthenon. Tapestry crochet is relatively easy and inexpensive; a perfect vehicle to the introduction of fiber art. Tapestry crochet is the art of crocheting with different colored strands of yarn while carrying the yarn, produces woven-like results. Fine Art Great works of art are sometimes reproduced as wall tapestries. These beautiful tapestries have a distinct and extraordinary quality.

Have you ever wondered what Tatting was? Tatting is a form of lace making made up of knots, which are done over a carrier thread. Tatting is a type of knotted lace. Tatting is made up of knotted rings and chains. Two shuttles are used in tatting when the little rings are not to be connected together at the bottom by a thread, when you want to hide the passage of the thread to another group of knots and when threads of several colours are used. Today antique tatting shuttles are highly collectible, as are old patterns and bits of lace.

Keepsake Christmas Ornament Box

I love handmade Christmas ornaments. Throughout the years I have collected a number of them, made by myself and several family members. These ornaments will make great keepsakes for our children and grandchildren.

I have been looking for a creative way to store these keepsake ornaments. In the past I have stored them with all my other tree ornaments, but I wanted a special place to store them, especially my daughter's ornaments that we have been collecting for her throughout the years. After purchasing about $20 in supplies and spending a couple of hours working on the project, I ended up with a beautiful keepsake ornament box that I hope my daughter will cherish for years to come.

To complete this project, you will need:

- Unfinished wooden box with lid
- Modge Podge (for decoupaging)
- Christmas cards
- Scissors
- Paint brushes
- Craft paint (optional)
- Acrylic sealer/finisher spray

All of the above items can be purchased at a craft store. The craft store I went to had a variety of boxes to choose from. I chose a small box that was $12.99. It was just what I was looking for!

The box I chose has a raised border around the edges that looked like it would be difficult to work around with decoupaging, so I chose to paint it instead. I painted all the borders with several coats of red acrylic paint.

Next I went through a big pile of old Christmas cards to find suitable images to decoupage onto the box. This was the fun part! Not only can you cut out pictures, you can also cut out holiday sentiments from friends and family members. Just in the past couple of years, several members of our extended family have passed away, and projects such as this keepsake ornament box are a great way to remember lost loved ones. Cut the cards into a variety of sizes and shapes.

Using a paintbrush, apply Modge Podge or a similar decoupage medium to the back of your cut out, then place the cut out on the box. Paint a coating of Modge Podge over the cut out. Continue pasting cut outs to the side of the box until it is covered, then go over the entire side again with another coating of Modge Podge. After the box is completely dry, you can apply another coating for good measure.

After the box is complete (and dry), you can spray an acrylic sealer/finisher spray over the entire box to protect the artwork and eliminate the tackiness of the decoupage.

That's it! There is no limit to the possibilities of decorating this beautiful ornament box. I haven't tried it yet, but I plan to line the inside of the box with felt to give it a more finished look.

How to Make Mountains and Hills For Your Model Railroad

Once you've got a train layout set up on a flat table, you might want to make it more interesting by adding some mountains and hills. There are a couple of ways to do this, and they are both easy.

Papier-Mch Method

If your layout is temporary, or you don't want to spend much money, you can use the papier-mch method. Basically, you just scrunch up some newspapers into the general shape of the hill or mountain, then cover them with sheets of newspaper dipped in papier-mch paste.

The traditional method of making papier-mch paste is to add one part water to one part flour. Some people prefer to boil the paste, saying that it makes the consistency smoother. Water to flour ratio is changed to five parts water to one part flour in this case. Other people use a three to one or a one to one ratio of water and polyvinyl acetate wood glue. Still others say that starch makes a fine paste. Adding a dash of cinnamon to the mixture gives the paste a pleasant smell; adding a dash of salt and sugar reduces the chances of the product developing mould.

You simply dip sheets of newspaper (fold them a couple of times to make them thicker) in the paste and drape them over the scrunched up newspapers. The sheets will be soft and pliable, so mould them into hills and valleys as you like. Let the papier-mch dry overnight. You will find that it is hard and rigid, like a piata.

Paint it with a water-based paint in shades of green (for grass) and brown (for dirt) and grey (for rock). You can also use spray paint, but make sure it is matte, not glossy, paint. While the paint is still wet, sprinkle some grass (available at the hobby shop) or green-coloured sawdust. When the paint is dry, add some lichen for bushes and trees (also available at any hobby shop).

Window Screening and Wooden Supports

If your train layout is permanent, a more durable method of making mountains and hills is to use screening and wooden supports. This also has the advantage that you can run tracks on the mountain itself, providing you make the appropriate supports. Basically, you cut wooden support blocks to the appropriate size, then drape window screening (called "fly screen" in Australia) over the blocks, stapling the screen to the blocks. You should fasten the blocks to the table with screws or nails first, so they don't move around.

If you want, you can build a second track bed around or through the mountain, elevated above the table. Simply use support blocks and plywood to make a rigid base for the track.

Once the screening is in place, pinch it in places to make rugged edges, ditches, and valleys. Then mix up some common household plaster (available at any hardware store to fix holes in a plaster wall) and slobber it over the screen. There is no need to be careful, just make sure all the screen is covered. A thicker plaster mix works much better than a thin mix, as the latter allows the screen to show through.

When you get to the rugged vertical bits, use horizontal strokes of a knife to simulate rock cuts. Let the plaster dry overnight and then paint as described above.

Finally, finish it off with lichen bushes and trees as appropriate.

Don't Forget Access

When you are deciding how big to make your mountain, and where to place it, also think about derailments. Murphy's Law guarantees that, at some point, your train is going to derail in the tunnel through your mountain. Make sure the tunnel entrance is large enough so you can reach in and get your train out.

Or consider these alternatives: If you have made a papier-mch mountain, and not glued it to the table, you can simply lift it off the table.

If you have made a permanent wood block and wire screen mountain, then consider cutting access holes in the table, below the mountain, so you can reach in and right the train or remove it. Don't make the holes too close to the track, because if the train does derail at that spot, you don't want it to fall through the hole onto the floor.

Bird Watching Binoculars - Enter A New World Of Bird Watching Wonder

Binoculars are one of the essentials when it comes bird watching. They take a tiny speck and turn it into something you can not only see but identify as part of your bird watching experience. There are a number of different brands and styles that are available on the market ranging from a few dollars to thousands of dollars a pair depending on what you are looking for.

For basic bird watching, a standard set that you find in any hardware or sporting goods store will probably be appropriate to your needs. They are only a few dollars and usually hold up fairly well. Binoculars are always rated with two numbers. The first indicates the magnification power that the binoculars has. The second number indicates the front lens diameter.

Usually these are written in the following manner 7x23. This set of numbers indicates that the binoculars have a magnification of seven with a diameter of 23 millimeters on the front lens. The magnification power of the binoculars that you want depends on how far you plan to be away from the birds you are planning to watch. If you are planning to watch just around your neighborhood at birds that may be in trees or on the ground, then a lighter magnification will probably work. For those that want the ability to spend a large amount of time watching birds interact naturally or where the required distance is significantly greater than watching normal everyday birds, you will want to get a stronger magnification.

There are binoculars that have a single level of magnification, these are usually the basic style that allow simply a slight amount of focusing. There are then the styles that allow you to be able to alter not only the focus of the lens but also the level of magnification, allowing you to adjust between objects that are closer and farther away without having to have additional sets of binoculars.

When purchasing binoculars, check them out and make sure they are not too heavy. Some pairs can be hard to handle or hold up for longer periods of time, so this is another factor that you should consider if you are in the market to purchase a pair of binoculars. There are a number of lightweight models that offer a full range of features without being hard to handle. This is essential if you are planning to carry them around while trekking looking for birds or planning on sitting for long periods of time holding them up.

Nothing ruins a bird watching trip more than ending up not being able to spend the time you want or get to where you want due to the weight of the equipment. Some of the features to look for is scratch resistance on the lens, and a way to carry them other than in your hand or around your neck. This will help to not only protect them, but keep them out of the way while you are making your way to your location of choice.

Bird Watching for Beginners

The sport of bird watching has been around for years and, right behind gardening, is the second fastest growing hobby in America. It has been said that learning to bird is like getting a lifetime ticket to theater of nature. And indeed, with their beauty and elegance, birds are an awesome part of life. Birds flash past in every shade from emerald to vermillion, beautiful as showy flower blossoms. How could we not watch birds?

As with any sport or hobby, however, bird watching does require patience and practice to learn and will by all means have its moments of frustrations. But if you give it a good try and learn the basics, in no time you will be addicted!

What follows are some tips to help you along the way.

Binoculars are a birder's eyes on the world, and they can greatly affect the quality of a bird outing. Good binoculars make for good birding, while bad binoculars can lead to missed birds and severe headaches induced by blurred images, double vision, and eye strain. When choosing a binocular for birding, cheap is definitely not the way to go.

Make sure the power (or magnification) is at least 7-power. The power is the first number given in the numerical notation that describes binoculars. For example, a "7 X 35" pair of "glasses" will make objects appear as if they are seven times as close as they actually are. Seven-power binoculars are about the minimum needed to see birds well. Binoculars 10- power or stronger can be difficult for some birders to hold steady.

Make sure that the second number ("35" for a "7 X 35" pair of glasses) is at least five times as large as the power (e.g., "7 X 35," "8 X 40," etc.). This second number describes the diameter, in millimeters, of the large lens that faces the object of interest - the "objective" lens. The larger this lens is, the greater the amount of light the binoculars gather and thus the easier it will be to see characteristics in dim light or on a dull-colored bird.

Don't buy compact or pocket-sized binoculars (typically 8 x 21, or 10 x 21) as your primary pair for birding. The size and weight are attractive, but no matter how good the optics, compacts provide a lower quality image than mid- or full-size binoculars. Another drawback is that most compacts have a narrow field of view, which makes it very difficult to locate and follow birds.

A field guide is a little book that's packed with information about birds. It's the next best thing to an expert birder by your side. It describes and shows pictures of the birds, and it tells you which details of each bird to look for. A field guide can tell you what kinds of birds might be in your particular area and give some excellent tips on what to look for in your bird watching. If you don't have a field guide, you won't have a clue about what kinds of birds you will be seeing, so this is essential to have.

Most guides are roughly organized in "phylogenetic order." Phylogenetic order is the way scientists classify all living things (not just birds) based on their evolutionary history - which creatures, according to likenesses in their present-day appearance, most probably evolved from common ancestors.

The beautiful part about birding is that it can truly be done anywhere! You can go to your local park and find some great specimens. If you're traveling, you'll find a new appreciation of the songs of birds and what you can find. You can even watch birds in your own back yard!

Color Therapy And The Colors Of Yarn And Threads

The idea of basket weaving as a form of therapy, traditionally used for patients with mental illness is often laughed at. But in a way, there is wisdom in the use of crafts for having a calming effect. In today's society, the meaning of "slow down", an easy and natural pace, and relaxation, has become pretty close to obsolete in meaning and in activity.

Chronic stress has taken on a whole new meaning to the point of being an epidemic, along with resistant depression, panic disorder, anxiety, and chronic fatigue. See the correlation between them? The first one causes the second; if you cannot relax, then your body and mind will keep going until it develops a disorder, letting you know "things are really not okay"... slow down!

How many of us feel the need to relax, and sit down with thread and needle to do so? I had a friend, when asked if she sewed or did needlework for relaxation, laughed out loud and said, "Honey... I staple my hems on my pants. Does that SOUND like I like to sew or do needlework?"

Regardless, people of today and in the near future are beginning to take things into their own hands. They do not just blindly call their doctor when they don't feel well, take a med without knowing what it is or the side effects, or take the diagnosis unquestioningly anymore without second opinions.

They research conditions through the Internet; they get second opinions from anyone and everyone; and all the while, talking to other people with similar conditions through support groups or online.

And many, many people are beginning to use alternative methods for their solutions. One such method for stress and mental conditions is the use of color therapy, used with the colored yarns and threads for activities such as cross-stitching and embroidery, and combined with the direction of art therapy in its creativity. This helps our mind relax, moving it to another sense of direction, and healing with color and creativity.

Color therapy has been around a long time; it is not a new kid on the block... only in the United States. It was not an alternative medicine, but used with light for health treatments clear back in recorded time.

It is speculated that color therapy in all areas originated in the roots of Ayurveda, an ancient India form of medicine practiced for thousands of years. The Chinese and ancient Egyptian cultures also used it as a form of medical treatments. In the United States, color therapy, art therapy, and light therapy are beginning to be recognized as a complementary system to "other traditional treatments".

Recently, chromotherapy and Feng Shui combined their fields; bringing specific colors into homes and workplaces, and attempting to achieve optimum balances of energy. Dr. Peter Mandel, a German acupuncturist and creative naturopath, has natural healing methods" through a process called color-puncture, which is now being taught in many countries.

Color therapy, or colorology, is a process used by itself as an alternative medicine method. Therapists who are trained in chromotherapy use color and light to balance the physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental aspects of the human body.

Traditional medicine is now calling it "integrative therapy" where the body, mind, and soul are all treated simultaneously: different terminology, similar ideas, and identical results. It is being scientifically proven by chromotherapists that color therapy does work. Many forms are used: art work, light films, colored material, colored water, yarns and threads, colored baskets, colored candles, gemstones, bath treatments, and colored glasses or lenses.

It really doesn't matter what the tool is as long as you are comfortable with it; what matters are the colors used. Different colors are associated with positive and negative effects, and can be used along with hydrotherapy (water therapy) and aromatherapy, to heighten the therapeutic effect.

Each color has a specific healing modality in color therapy. When you are using a red thread in your hands, and visually focusing on the red patterns, things change and develop in your mind and your emotions, affecting all the senses -- not just the five main ones. Let's look at a few of the different colors, and what purpose they can be used for when designing your next cross-stitch pattern or purchasing yarns or threads:

  1. White -- this color is used for regeneration, providing energy and balancing the body's rhythm; it stimulates the production of serotonin, which regulates both the sleep and nervous system. (Why do you think we count "white sheep" to fall asleep?). The color white rebalances the psychophysical and hormonal systems in people who suffer from S.A.D. (seasonal affective disorders).
  2. Green -- green is a very healing color, which is why plant therapy works so well and herbal therapy is slowly replacing many traditional medicines. It regulates the pituitary gland, fights depression, bulimia, and many psychosomatic conditions affecting the gastric system. It also calms the nervous system, fights irritability, and insomnia. Many color therapists suggest it for individuals who are recovering from nervous breakdowns.
  3. Blue -- this is a very soothing, calming color. It reduces blood pressure and stimulates the parasympathetic system -- the system that is referred to as the "rest and digest" system. Bluecalms the breathing and the heart rate, has anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxing effects (have you ever wondered why "Icy Hot" has a blue tinge when rubbed into your muscles, or the Vick's bottle has a blue color?). It fights tension physically and mentally, and is used in relaxation.
  4. Yellow -- this increases neuromuscular tone along with purifying the blood, helping digestion, plus having a cleansing effect, which promotes a sense of security. The color yellow stimulates happiness and a sense of well-being, which is why a good walk outside on a sunny day does wonders to a bad frame of mind!
  5. Red -- this powerful color is used to energize and stimulate. It affects the heart by increasing pulse rates and also body temperature. Muscles will increase their tension; excitement will develop along with sensuality and strong emotions. Many early civilizations used the color red in their dcor, uniforms, and flags.

A balance of color needs to be worked out and designed, as too much of one color is used, enough white is added for balance. When a "tight" feeling is felt inside you as you work, then not enough white has been added. Either add more white, or go for some complementary colors for direction.

Intarsia Woodworking - Creating Pictures From Wood Pieces

The history of wood intarsia creations is far from clear. The best guess appears to take us back to the mid 1200's in Italy. Travelers returning home from trying to find a route to India would no doubt have brought back wood from trees they had never seen before. These "samples" were probably assembled into an intarsia wood mosaic of some form for display. This would no doubt be presented to the king, queen, or whoever had financed the trip.

We know that this wood intarsia art form all but disappeared for quite a length of time and was revived by a lady by the name of Judy Gale Roberts. Many of the ideas about intarsia wood that we have today were first suggested by this lady. She has been responsible for a wealth of patterns and ideas.

True intarsia woodworking requires assorted woods of different colors, the use of these colors, grain structure and direction make beautiful decorative pictures from wood. No paint or stain is used to change any intarsia wood color, just wood from assorted wood species give the different colors.

Do you like working with your hands? Do you like wood, especially different kinds of wood? Are you interested in creating unusual intarsia wood art? If the answers are yes then this wood intarsia art form just may be for you. You can begin very easily if you have access to a scroll saw or a band saw with an 1/8" blade. There are free intarsia woodworking plans online to get you started and the local lumber dealer or cabinet workshop could be an excellent source of dry intarsia wood.

Are you looking for a rewarding hobby? One that you can use to fill up those leisure time hours after you retire? One that you could develop into a home based business? Intarsia wood working is worth considering. It can be as simple or detailed as you desire, wood intarsia subjects can have 10-200+ pieces that are sanded and fitted together to form the final product.

Intarsia woodworking can become addicting, at least for some. The satisfaction of creating a one of a kind masterpiece from small pieces of wood is very satisfying. That satisfaction is multiplied when family and friends comment on your creation or someone wishes to purchase one of your art pieces.

Intarsia wood art pieces are always one of a kind, finding two pieces the same shape may be possible but the wood color, grain and direction will be different. The choices available for people to create special gifts for special people are what makes Intarsia wood art such an interesting hobby and the possibility of having a home business. When experience is gained the creation of your own designs are constructed then the true creation process can be realized.

Creative Ways with Magazine Pictures

There are thousands of magazines out on the market, and each one comes loaded with images. Everything from a cup and saucer to a remote country setting, these offer up a wealth of inspiration for the card-maker.

As much as we love to create something new and individual, sometimes there is not time to whip up a card involving more complex techniques. Using magazine pictures is easy, fun, and adaptable to fit any need. Struggling to make a card for a guy, then obtain a fishing or car magazine and there are dozens of options. Cards made with such images are not suitable for sale because of copyright issues.

Here are a few basic ideas to make a lovely greeting card from the magazines lying around.

Cut a square from the middle of the front of the card using a cutting system or craft knife. Draw a frame around the cutout and insert an image behind. There you have an instant window on a new view. If there is time to get more creative, leave a cross bar to create individual window panes. Alternatively, cut out a circle, oval, or whatever shape suits the image. Instead of drawing around the window glue on lace, sequins, braid, or glitter for an entirely different style.

Choose two card colours to complement the chosen image and each other. Mat the picture onto one colour and then mount it onto the card. Add some detailing for extra interest. If the picture is of a beach, glue on some small shells. For a baby card, a few little pink or blue buttons is nice, or for a thank you using a picture of a cup of coffee, glue on a cluster of coffee beans.

Find a picture of a container; a vase, bucket, or bowl is ideal. Cut around the outside of the vessel. From plain coloured areas of the magazine, cut out shapes freehand for leaves, stems, and flowers. Glue the chosen base in place and arrange the pre-cut flower parts to form a unique bouquet.

Take a long picture and trim into three segments. The center piece needs to be the widest. The two outside pieces will be narrower than the middle, but the same width as each other. Arrange carefully on the card so that the card background shows between the segments of the image, ensuring the pieces stay level along the bottom. For a more 3D version, cut out a frame from card and place over top. Corrugated cardboard or coloured crinkled card works well for this.

Cut out numerous pictures of similar objects. Flowers are perfect for this, as are leaves, shells, and food. You will need a lot of them. Completely cover the front of the card so that there is no piece of the card showing. Overlap images and make sure the overlaps are random. On a separate piece of card write a greeting and mat this on top of the card, to one side. I keep a box of cutouts ready for this purpose, cutting them as I come across images before throwing a magazine away. When I need to make one up I just add glue and it's ready to go.

If you find multiple copies of a magazine or particular image, see if it's suitable to use for creating a paper tole image. This is where an image is layered, using fewer selected parts of the picture as it is built up to create a three dimensional effect. Place foam mounting tape between each layer to accentuate the raised profile.

Once one starts looking at images in a magazine as potential craft resources, an exciting new world of creative options opens up. Use these ideas and add your own imagination to come up with many more possibilities for a unique gift card that is sure to delight the recipient.

USA Half Dimes-A Short History Lesson

The United States half penny is a little piece very interesting, both in the historical significance and beauty. Half of ten of 1792 were the first authorized documentation from the new government and the United States have said they are stricken with silver spoons provided by Martha Washington. Only about 1500 coins were minted in 1792 with regular production to more than 86000, starting in 1794. For the next 80 years, it is the lowest in the United States standard silver coin ever struck the United States Mints, both from a perspective of the size and weight. flowing hair and bust draped design from 1794 to 1805 half Ten weighed just 1.35 grams, the composition was .8924 money, and it has a diameter of 16.5mm. The US Mint has taken a leave half the dimes start in 1806 and production would not resume until the bust capped range of 1829 to 1837. In 1837 and 1838 all the coins in silver US changed the beautiful Liberty Seated Liberty Seated or series. Sou half of this series has changed the composition of .900 silver. So just where did half penny acquire its name? In 1785 the decimal system of coinage was adopted by the new Congress, and it was then that half penny technically first came to light. Although, in the dawn of our history of coins, it was first known as the half bit disme and then changed to one-half penny. The name disme, which means the tenth figure terminology in English, was selected by the first council of the Treasury. The letter "S" was subsequently dropped disme probably for the short-dime words of all the files that appears to be strictly an American invented word for our monetary system to use. What ever its proper context can be, it was apparent on every tenth and twentieth dollar coins in 1837 to date. Before 1829 no marks to the value of the coin appears on the dime and half of 1829 to 1837 a 5 quater appeared on all dimes half. The half penny series ceased production in 1873. So that's what happened? The production of nickel Shield five hundred pieces from 1866, Liberty Head Nickel in 1883, the Buffalo Nickel in 1913 and the Jefferson Nickel still in use today.

Why Dime miniature US Coin?

It may seem strange that the penny is smaller than the one hundred, whose face value is only 10% of the tithe. The reason for this metal on the door which was originally used to produce dimes - money - is much more important than copper, the metal originally used for centimes. Originally US coins were made of gold, silver or copper. The coins struck at the mint in the United States in Philadelphia, penniless copper was below the One Hundred and Half Cent, less than a silver dollar, Half Dollar, and Dollar Quarter, and smaller than the golden eagle ( ten dollars each), Half Eagle (five dollars each), and Quarter Eagle (two dollars fifty cents each). Interestingly, the tithe was not the smallest size piece during those early years, there was one for five hundred silver coin called Half Dime, which was even lower. The half penny is considered the first regular issue US coin. Other pieces smaller than the penny were three hundred of silver and gold coin to a dollar coin, the two products during the mid-19th century. The public has been very critical of each of these pieces. They were too small. And it was not just a matter of convenience. These small but valuable (in terms of purchasing power of this era) were easily lost items. At a time when even a penny could finance a purchase, imagine the sorrow of losing more than three hundred, five hundred, or worse, a dollar! It is not very surprising that the small pieces were finally removed without replacement. Nevertheless, these pieces are very collectible. Top grade specimens have almost little jewel. And you have to admire the precision required for the manufacture of these short pieces, each of which has a specific, but sharply reduced, a replica of the original design.

Polish Count Casimir Pulaski's 2 cents US commemorative stamps

On January 16, 1931 bright red 2-cent stamp was released by the United States Post Office to mark the 150th anniversary of the death of Neuilly-sur-Seine heroes Count Casimir Pulaski (1746-1779). The commemorative stamp bears the likeness of Pulaski. The image of him on the stamp was taken from an original etching by HB Hall Jones who appeared in the history of Georgia. The stamp was issued in Savannah, where he died of injuries suffered in the Battle of Savannah in 1779. Count Casimir Pulaski came to this country from Poland in the summer of 1777 and joined George Washington's Continental Army, as a volunteer, during the American Revolution. A military commander and skilled rider in Poland, Pulaski was known as the father of the American cavalry. He commanded Pulaski's Legion, which was one of the few regiments of cavalry in the American Continental Army. Pulaski took part in many battles, never participate in a victory. It seems strange that a stamp will be issued in honor of a man who has never won a major battle in our war for independence. No fault has never been on this great leader as he has always been fighting terrible obstacles. One of the first tributes to the Polish Patriot PuBaski is General Pulaski Memorial Day, held each year in October, 11th. New York, Kentucky and Grand Rapids, Michigan held Pulaski Days with Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. There is also a Statue of Liberty in Pulaski Plaza in Washington, DC, Savannah, Georgia, Detroit, Michigan Pulaski and a park in Northampton, Massachusetts. In addition to the 2 cents US commemorative stamp issued in 1931, the USPS issued a commemorative Casimir Pulaski Postcard, September 11, 1979. The drawing shows Pulaski on horseback during the siege of Savannah, Georgia in 1779.

Here, there are collectors who want franked letters from presidents, Cabinet officers, generals and other important officials like the Congress and senators. Stamp collectors and Autograph collectors seeking signatures on these VIP franked blankets. Perhaps the best use of the franking privilege was during wartime when soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines were allowed to send email to their beloved home's simply written "free" where Stamp would normally go to a letter. I suppose, and we hope that this franking privilege is being done today by our army in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lenci dolls made in the years 1920 and 1930 are particularly desired by collectors because of their superb craftsmanship, and also because they are so irresistibly adorable. The most notable among Lenci the 83-year history was the period between the two world wars. These are said to be the most useful and well done for the best of their creations. The beginning highly sought Lenci dolls felt the oil pressure and painted faces. They also felt ears that were double sewn on individually. Their heads swiveled on their bodies. They jointed shoulders and hips and some dolls were rooted hair wigs on the mohair. They often had side browsing eyes and were dressed in costumes designed to be made from felt or organdy. Some of these Lenci dolls can be found early today carrying things such as an animal or a wooden broom. The later Lenci dolls are reported as being less well made and many have fabric covered cardboard torsos felt faces that are difficult and which were compared with tissue covered cardboard. The latter could be found dolls dressed in clothes made of cotton, rayon and taffeta. They are also generally less well accessorized than the previous best made dolls. Lenci dolls apparently were also imitated everywhere since the year of 1927, in Turin, Florence, and then in Germany, France and England. Imitation dolls were also said to be cheaper and this competition has caused serious problems for society Lenci. dolls that can be traced to the years 1920 and 1930 are worth a lot more money. The 149 Lenci face is also valuable. If Lenci doll is 13 inches tall, its estimated value is about $ 750 to $ 1000. The 17-inch doll will double in price, and if the height is more than 19 inches, the value is approximately between $ 1700 and $ 2500. The value of these dolls is also based on the amount of soil being at Top of dollars with a very light and not serious dirt. Easy Ideas To retain Craft Supplies

Craft, in its various forms, requires a variety of tools and supplies. Even if a person is given a single job, they will find themselves struggling to find a safe home for all the accouterments. When one dabbles in several trades, as I do, then that the problem is growing at an almost overwhelming problem. A place to keep all these scissors and needles, glues, pens, paints and paper, ribbons and wool Becomes Key to the points safe from harm and easy to access. In the absence of a storage system, things become easily lost or destroyed. It also contributes to a lack of productivity. Fortunately for the avid crafter, there is a lot of storage solutions, which are either free or at low cost to make. Many of them involve a little crafty manual labor, too. Small objects such as buttons and beads can be stored in almost all containers to clean up the mess of empty matchboxes. For an order idea, collecting empty matchboxes, and glue together to form a stack four by four. Wrap around the edge of decorative paper, leaving the ends exposed. Make a hole in the front of each insert matchbox and wool yarn or ribbon, leaving a small loop on the outside as a handle. Tape the ends inside the box. If desired, glue a sample of the contents in the front of each cache. You can make this series of "drawers" as large as you need. Try to make two batteries and to join them back to back for the creation of a more stable, more twice the storage. ready to plastic trays are available for these purposes. Inexpensive Cloth Napkins

Cloth towels are the best way to save a bit of elegance in your life, either for the best of family dinners, or simply your daily meals. Paper just does not hold up, and it usually takes more than one to get through the meal. The constant waste of paper products, our world will exhaust all these resources, it is time that we all stepped up to the plate and do our fair share. What better time than now with the holidays upon us to begin. This need not be expensive because it is very easy to create cloth napkins inexpensive. Christmas is just four weeks and I am busy out my good table linens and control for stains and choose the best. The towels used to take me forever to look through and identify those who seem to be the most cost because they are more easily soiled. No more! I always have fresh ones to choose because I started to make my own. Doing my own towels was one of the main fun projects I have ever encountered. I liked sewing sewing since my first class in the seventh grade. I started to make my own clothes when I was in high school and then my mother taught me to my own knitting sweaters, and I was at work. I started to make my own cloth napkins just a moment ago, and have found many ways to do so. For napkins, we are going to do, you do not need any knowledge of sewing, just a little patience. With little time for the holidays, we will study the easiest way to make inexpensive cloth napkins. If you do not have any suitable tissue to be used, you will have to make a trip to your local fabric store. Joanne Fabrics are often Walmart or mine as it is possible to find exactly what you want on sale at one of these stores. You need to find a fabric that will compliment your tablecloth, placemats or dishes. Often a piece of fabric can be found at least a dollar or two and a court that is perfect. It needs to be cotton, because that is what happens for the best works. You will need approximately one yard for each four towels you are going to do. If the piece of cloth measuring 36 "X 36" you will be able to cut four of 18 seats. Before you begin to cut, wash and dry your fabric and then proceed as follows: 1. If your fabric has to be ironed do so, because it will be easier to see what you are doing. 2. At the upper edge of your fabric, you must descend the selvedge about "and snip a small cut in the fabric. 3. Now you tear the fabric of an edge to another. This places the fabric on the right cereal. 4. fixture Cut cardboard or cardboard poster to the size you need. 5. Cut your square. rotary A knife works very well. 6 . If you have a sewing machine, and then a line of zigzag stitch around the edge of your square about "from the board. If you do not have the use of a sewing machine, this step may be omitted.

7. Now you are ready for your fringe edges. Since your fabric is entitled to grain, it is very easy to start your fringe. Just pull a thread from one side of the place to another, and this continues until draw a thread through all the way. Then draw four or five sons, or until you think it looks good, do the same on each side, and you are done. Frange They may be a little more because they are Lavs, but not to worry. You now have your own hands, cloth towels. You might also consider buying a white cloth or natural color and then experimenting with the idea of how to decorate. Decorating can be fun! You could try painting designs if you are artistic, or embroidery is another fun idea. Try monogram initials in a corner of a truly elegant touch. Rapides Another idea is to make cocktail napkins in the same way. I was on a certain Christmas in a pattern flannel fabric. They were very good and absorbing. I am trying other means which may be of interest. Come back again soon.

Internationally, the collection of stamps often equates with large males. For example, the "Treskilling Yellow" one of Sweden was misprinted in the wrong color, putting its value at over $ 2 million. Historically, Britain "Penny Black" (the first adhesive stamp) sold for $ 200 in the year 2000, and went unused as long as $ 3000! Or imagine own "British Guiana Magenta," rare stamp with a face value of a cent, but an estimated value of $ 935000! There is a lot of controversy around it. As there is only one known copy in existence, some say that this was a modification 4 cents one, but these claims were refuted. Others speculate that another copy was discovered, but was purchased by Arthur Hind, who had the original and that destroys the copy quietly so as not to lose its value. In 1999 a counterfeit copy was found in Bremen, Germany. Postage stamp collecting is a fun and relatively inexpensive way to collect historical artwork. You can start with a catalog of navigation such as Scott catalog (for US stamps), or check out KenmoreStamp.com MysticStamp.com and stamps online. If you are looking seriously at the collection of stamps as an investment, you should start your quest at the National Philatelic Society.

The Multiplane

A new Multiplane is quite an investment - when I started this series of projects five years ago I was still under the spell of this tool and Stanley still had a couple of cheaper alternatives which could be recommended for grooving and cutting dados.

Five years on (running evening classes and producing the home learning course), how do I feel about them? The only successor to the Stanley/Record models that I knew was the Clifton - I have three old Stanleys and had one new Clifton; it was the best - too precious for sharing - so has moved on.

I see there are some alternatives showing up on the internet now, but the Stanley ones have gone (and to put it mildly, they were not very sophisticated). You can still get second hand ones, but make sure they are in good condition and all the parts are there. There are websites devoted to the Multiplane and some people hate them but, after relying on these most complex and most versatile of hand tools, I think I can add my pennyworth.

I have worked fairly intensively with lots of electric routers and a variety of spindle moulders over the years and the multiplane is certainly not a router or a spindle. There are some big limitations of the plough type of plane (including the Multiplane) that come to mind; you can't plunge them, fix them to a trammel for curved work, or do an end stopped groove or dado. Apart from that, working with them is slower and requires more patience and skill.

So why use them at all? Well, they are still very versatile and to the dedicated hand tool user there is no alternative.

Old wooden planes -moulding planes etc. had a better design. The continuous wooden sole in the shape of the cutter grips the wood better and cuts out chatter, but good ones are hard to get now.

The 55, which is the most sophisticated multiplane that Stanley made, has an extra piece to beef up the sole but even that doesn't allow you to use difficult wood. I have tried it. So, with that in mind, if you are lucky enough to have a good Multiplane don't expect too much of it! Select your stock from the straight grained pieces at your disposal. Pine will be easier to work with than hardwoods. Always use the "spur" cutters when cutting across the grain and even when you are cutting along the grain when you are working with cross-grained woods like elm.

So what do Clifton say about it? The 450 Multiplane is for those who enjoy the sheer craftsmanship of working with hand tools.

The body is machined from quality grey iron castings, nickel chrome plated. The handle, knob and fence are made from rosewood. The plane is supplied with a set of 24 cutters made of Sheffield tool steel, accurately ground, hardened and tempered, to 61-62 Rockwell "C" hardness, cutting edge ground to 35 degrees, and these are packed in a plastic wallet. The Multiplane comes complete with all accessories packed in a traditional wooden box, together with full instruction leaflet.

An additional set of 16 cutters is also available (these include sash cutters, fluting cutters and reeding cutters).

Beginner's Guide To Ebay Stamps

Ebay stamps have made stamp collecting an affordable hobby. Often times, one can find great deals at a fraction of the cost -- with some stamps costing as little as one cent! Additionally, stamps can be traded or sold on the site as well, giving their collectors the ultimate target market to maximize profits.

With bids starting as low as one cent, it's crazy not to check out the Ebay stamps page! To get started buying stamps on Ebay, just register, browse the categories or type keywords into the search engine.

When you find an item you like, place a bid and select maximum amount you're willing to spend, then Ebay will bid on your behalf against other bidders. Or you can choose the "buy it now" option and you'll have to pay the - buy it now price - to avoid all competition. Buyers can pay with a credit card, checking account, mail or through PayPal.

Curious people, who may not necessarily have the desire to buy at this time, can still obtain information on them by following one of several links the Ebay stamps page provides:

1) the American Philatelic Society,
2) the PSE authentication center,
3) the American Stamp Dealers Association or industry publications.

The education and popular stamp terms pages host a wealth of information for beginners. For the committed hobbyist, a whole community is created to share one's passion -- with stamps chat rooms, stamps seller alerts or newsletters, as well as collectibles forums.

For sellers, Ebay stamps attract the perfect target market and allows online bidding (much like an auction) so sellers may actually make more money than their asking prices! The process is relatively simple too. First, the seller will have to look around and decide what to sell. After registering, prospective sellers just upload photos and descriptions of their items, turn on email notifications and wait for the bidding to start.

Sellers can get paid immediately by PayPal, track all listings through the "My Ebay" section and even print labels and postage from their personal computers. Bulk listing and management tools make it easy to track one's offers.

Some people may choose to open an Ebay store, which gives them email marketing, free reporting and lower fees. Ebay also offers free business consulting to help new members get started. Whether collecting or selling, Ebay is a great starting point!

Ebay is the perfect way to add to your collection. However, be aware that Ebay may not be for everyone. You will have to enter some sensitive information into Ebay's secured site, with which not everyone is comfortable.

Since sellers are from all over, buyer beware! Check out the seller's credentials and ratings before buying. There are certain protections on Ebay, but it's not infallible. You may also have to wait a long time for your investment to arrive in the mail.

Ebay stamps can increase the size and quality of your collection ten-fold -- of course, in some ways, it's not as easy as just buying at an actual auction or store.

Wood With a Past

Wood has been used for many purposes. One of its primary uses was as a fuel and it has also been used for making artworks, furniture, tools, natural wooden toys and weapons, as well as a construction material.

In construction it is used to make the frames for roofs as well as flooring. It was also used up until the 1800's for building ships.

Wooden weapons of today are usually used in the martial arts arena, where as centuries ago it was common place in most all combat. There were bow and arrows, slingshot, shields, spears and even swords and this list represents just a few.

Natural wooden toys have been around for thousands of years, the spinning top being one of the first. But nowadays there are hundreds of toys crafted from hardwood and softwood, from the elegant child's rocking horse to the infants jigsaw. All of which are finely made and made to last.

There are tools partly made from wood. The shaft of a hammer, the handle on a wood saw or the handles on chisels. This means the tools will last longer as you can replace the wooden parts for new, as they wear out.

Furniture as like many of the items talked about here have been around for centuries. There are still antique pieces that still look as though they have just been made. There are chairs, tables, fire surrounds, desks, bureaus all of which look as elegant as the child's rocking horse, talked about earlier.

What about artwork? There are numerous types of this work and one that comes to mind is the wooden horses carved lovingly as they were used on the children's fairground carousels. There are the intricate carvings made onto wooden plates and bowls. But there are carved figures in places you wouldn't expect, just like the owl carved into a tree (about two metres high) in a cheshire villiage.

When wood is finally discarded it is used for making wood chippings for using as pathways in parks, woodland and play areas. But the most significant use of wooden waste must come with the UK's first large-scale wood-burning power station on Teesside. The plant will save 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year compared to fossil burning stations.

Collectibles Today

There are as many kinds of collectibles as there are kinds of people. One of the most popular collectibles there is relates to soft drinks. These collectibles range from things created when the beverages were first formulated to more recent limited bottles or cans and even promotional items. Some collectors also specialize in soda machines as well.

Bottles are one of the more common collectibles since they aren't space hogs and are available in an array of styles. The prices also come in in a wide array, which is also wonderful. Most desirable of all, and bringing a higher price are bottles that still contain the product.

Soda related collectibles fans have been specializing in single brands. Of these, there are quite a few fans of Pepsi, which was created in 1893 by a druggist in North Carolina named Caleb Bradham. It was originally called "Brad's Drink". Five years later, it was renamed Pepsi. Older bottles, which are rarer, are valued higher, although some more recent specially produced bottles will bring top dollar, such as the Elvis bottles from a few years ago.

Containers that are representative of a style change are of particular worth to collectors, no return bottles and the first cans being examples. Logo changes such as shape, label, or colors are also of particular interest. Several people collect the wood cases that bottles used to be stored in or the cardboard six pack holders with intricate designs on them.

Signs are another popular collectible. These can be outdoor signs made from wood or metal, or indoor display signs of various shapes, sizes and designs, or even murals when whole walls may be removed and sold. Some signs include lighting or clocks and are popular for their functionality. Condition is a huge factor in value and treasured collectibles are wooden signs that were stored indoors before much weathering and still in new condition.

Another popular item is the soda machine. Some collectors specialize in Pepsi machines alone. These will range from the metal box that contained ice and bottles, to the more recent, automated machines, and all that fell between. There are many that are available, the most valued still function. The prices will range from below $100 up to a few thousand dollars for rarer machines.

Other collectibles can include nearly anything from sweatshirts to china. Limited edition merchandise is commonly made by soft drink companies and is very easy to find online from specialists in soda memorabilia or on auction sites. Glasses and trays are popular and one of the most affordable items.

Rare Baseball Cards - Collect History

We all know that collecting baseball cards is a hobby that many people enjoy in this life. For collectors there isn't anything more exciting to to come across a card which they don't yet have in their collection. The more sought after cards for baseball collections are the more rare or vintage cards. These cards have a much higher monetary value, of course.

Most of the "old" baseball cards you will see today are reproductions of the originals. There are, however, still a few of the original cards in circulation. Often there are less than 100 cards left of a given player and year. High demand for these cards has pushed their prices up, in some cases to thousands of dollars. The exact price level is determined by demand, condition, and the number of cards available.

Many rare baseball cards are those of very recognizable players that had spectacular and even historical baseball careers. Cards of players like Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and even Honus Wagner are among this group. These cards were collectibles even during the time these players were actively playing the game and are even more valuable today.

Many rare baseball cards show wear on their edges and corners, and some even have creases on the card itself. Much of this wear is caused by the thin and inferior quality cardboard that companies used to print cards for certain players. Another reason for the wear is that many collectors were children who collected the cards simply for the love of the game, and they didn't take measures to keep the cards in mint condition.

Now unless there is a large amount of damage to the cards, these rare baseball cards still have the ability of causing lots of excitement when they appear in public. The main reason for this being the lack of cards which can be found by baseball collectors. For this reason when one of these rare baseball cards like that of the T206 Honus Wagner card surfaces you can see that collectors and wealthy fans themselves are gearing up for a high stakes bidding.

Topps and baseball cards go hand in hand. When a trader thinks baseball card they think of Topps. Topps first produced card sets in 1951 this set was oriented towards the game and it was a Black and Red set. It was in 1952 when the modern trading card was brought to life. This card set is the most revered of sets. Collectors marvel at the 1952 sets history.

Ever since that time, Topps can produced its famous baseball card sets. Today, Topps has an established tradition of producing high-quality baseball cards. Topps has also added new technology to the cards and their packaging, and now sports many other brands that help it remain the nation's leading baseball card company.

The majority of collectors, even serious ones, do not have the means to deal in Wagners and Ruths. In recent years, MLB cards from the '70s have proven to be a great investment for the common collector. Cards of Mike Schmidt, Carlton Fisk, Steve Garvey, Dusty Baker, and other greats from the era have shown a marked increase in value.

Although their value continues to increase, most people can still afford to buy MLB cards from the 1970s. Many of the most valuable cards are available for less than $300.

Assessing the Value of Your Collection

Many people who collect valuables hope that one day their collections will be worth something. Others might build an impressive collection for sheer joy of having that collection, but there is still a small part in each person that secretly wants to know what their collection is worth. While not every collection will yield a fortune, it's still good to know for insurance purposes.

Assessing collections is an art. Many people have taken their hobby to the next level and have become experts on specific items. For the most accurate results, finding one such specialist will help immensely, but there are steps you can take to do some of the initial footwork on your own.

Price Guides

The best place to start to find the value of a single piece in your collection, or the entire collection itself, is price guides. Price guides are generally books with listings for a wide selection of collectibles in different stages of upkeep - fair, mint, poor, etc. Some guides will have several types of collectibles listed in a single source, but you can also narrow down your search with more specific information for a exact item or type of collection.

Find Local Antique Shops or Trade Shows

Chances are, you're not the only one collecting the items you have. The best places to compare the value of your collection to others are at trade shows or antique shops. Keep in mind the market value can fluctuate from the number you may have found on your own. The market value for some items might be high, but that doesn't mean you'll find somebody who is willing to pay that much for it. Other times, an item listed at a low price might bring you twice as much if you find someone willing to pay.

Get Online

Internet auction sites, such as eBay and others are great resources for a quick assessment. You might not find your exact item, but you might find a listing of something that is similar or within the same collection. Auction sites make it easy to keep track of the number of bids and the amount each person is bidding. If you want to sell your item, list it and place a "minimum bid amount." By doing this, you will get at least that amount for your item and possibly even more. Competition is fierce and don't be surprised if the real bidding war doesn't start until the last few minutes just before the auction is scheduled to close.

Check with Dealers and Appraisers

Sometimes the only way to determine the true value of your collection is through the expert eyes of a professional. If you want a general idea of the item's worth, asking for an informal appraisal from a licensed antique or collectible dealer is a good place to start. Once you know if you've got something worth pursuing, you can arrange for a paid appraisal and decide whether you want to keep or sell your item.

Collecting things is a great hobby. Collectibles help us stay connected with the past and often the sentimental value far outweighs the monetary value. Many people, though, collect items in hopes that one day the collection will bring a great return for their investment. Either way, it's always fun to know how much your collection is worth whether you plan on keeping it or selling it one day in the future.

Discover the Ancestral Roots of Your Arts and Crafts Hobby

Are you an Arts & Crafts aficionado? If you like simple oak or pine furnishings, you likely are. This article talks about the history of the Arts & Crafts movement, explores the various disciplines, and discusses the early champions of the movement. Note that what the English call Arts & Crafts we Americans refer to as Mission. The terms are used interchangeably.

The Arts & Crafts period developed late in the nineteenth century and continued until the 1930s. With the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, assembly-line production enabled the mass production of merchandise. This was troubling to artisans and anyone who valued individually hand-crafted items and merchandise of top quality. This is the group that advocated well-made items of a quality that mass production could not achieve. The movement began with furniture and expanded to ceramics, wallpaper, metal work, architecture, and stained glass. The emphasis was on quality workmanship and consisted primarily of black, brown, yellow, and green tones in all fields. Of the many Arts & Crafts artisans of the period the most well-known are Frank Lloyd Wright, Gustav Stickley, and William Morris. Reproductions of their work are widely available today.

William Morris

One of the earliest champions of the Arts & Crafts movement was William Morris of Britain (1834-1896), who formed Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. with a group of likeminded artisans. The company, later renamed Morris & Co., worked in many areas including stained glass, ceramics, fabric, wallpaper, and architecture. The company designed his home, Red House, which is one of the earliest examples of architecture ascribed to the movement.

It's no surprise that anything made by Morris is highly sought after today, as he is considered a founding father of the Arts & Crafts movement. Most of his best work can only be found in museums. His work can generally be authenticated by the "Morris & Co." stamp.

Gustav Stickley

Gustav Stickley (1857-1942) and his family began the Arts & Crafts movement in the United States in upstate New York during the 1870s. An architect and designer, he started a furniture company and introduced the Craftsman line, which continues to be produced today. A Gustav Stickley sideboard was sold at a Christie's auction in 1997 for $596,000 by a preeminent collector of Arts & Crafts, Barbra Streisand.

Frank Lloyd Wright

Best known for his work as an architect, American Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was a pioneer of the Arts & Crafts movement. His specialty was designing not just a home, but all of the furniture as well. Today his work commands top dollar when available, but it is rarely available. Two of his most famous architectural designs and the Guggenheim Museum in New York and Fallingwater, a residential home.

Furniture

Solidly constructed simple oak and ash furniture typifies the furniture of the Arts & Crafts period. Common design elements include rush seating, horizontal or vertical slat backs and sides, and spindle backs and sides. Upholstery colors typify the period, generally done in brown, green, or black leather. Much of this furniture is still in use today because of its rigid construction.

Ceramics

Mass production was abhorred by the potters of the Victorian era. The graceful Japanese Aesthetic Movement style influenced craftsmen to emulate it, and creative forms and new glazes gave potters a new area to pursue. The fundamental perception of ceramics in North America changed as a result of the Arts & Crafts movement. Long seen as utilitarian, pottery became more decorative to appeal to the new upper class that could afford to splurge on a superfluous object. Dragons and flowers were often depicted in yellow, green, and brown glaze on pottery of the era.

Metalwork

Artisans who worked with copper, brass, silver, and pewter soon joined the move to hand-crafted workmanship. Tiffany and Liberty are two companies of the era that produced pieces combining both machine and hand production methods. Green and brown enamels and hammered surfaces are common characteristics of this work.

Applying Ancient Indian Wisdom to Today's Best Crafting Ideas

Handicraft is described as something made entirely by hand, without technological help. This has been done in India for at least 5000 years. Although some stone and bone weapons have been found that predate the oldest handicrafts, these are not considered handicrafts. India's history of arts and crafts is interesting, covering thousands of years and millions of square miles. Indian traditional handicrafts revolve around the needs of commoners, patrons, royalty, religious beliefs, and domestic and foreign trade.

The earliest proven archaeological discoveries of Indian handicrafts date back to the Indus Valley civilization circa 3000 B.C. At this time Indian craftsmen excelled in making jewelry, pottery, beads, terracotta, and weaving. This period represents a significant technical advancement in the field of handicrafts, as evidenced by excavations in Mohenjodaro, Lothal, Kotdigy, Dholaveera, Harappa, and others. Many artifacts have been found that reflect the burgeoning skill of the local craftsmen of the era.

The next significant advancement in handicrafts took place in the Vedic age, around 1500 to 700 BC. The Vedas excelled in weaving, wood crafting, and pottery making, and began using clay, wood, and metal in their handicrafts. Later in the Vedic period, a noteworthy development was the use of iron in weapons on a large scale. This is the period when crafts traditions became enmeshed in the culture and social structure.

Indian handicrafts came close to perfection during the Maurva period, highlighted by the advancement in stone crafts. This is the period of the great transformation of Ashoka to Buddhist reformism after hardcore imperialism, and craftsmen were now indulged in many activities. It is believed that at least 84,000 stupas were created under Ashoka, the most prominent of which can still be seen today at Vaishali, Amaravati, Bharhut, Sanchi, and Mathura. The iron pillars of Vaishali and Delhi are wonderful examples of metallurgy dating from the same period.

A period of assimilation of regional influence in Indian arts and crafts followed the Maurvan. This was a time of great political turmoil, India could not be ruled for long periods by a single dynasty. Invasions by Indo-Bactrians, Shakas, Indo-Greeks, and Kushanas turned the Indian political scene upside down. The handicrafts of this period were strongly influenced by these invasions of central Asians and others, as evidenced by Buddhist sculptures from this period found at Swat Valley, Bamiyan, Taxila, Begram, and other areas. A direct result of Greek influence at this time is the depiction of Buddha with curly hair, draped in flowing clothing. The Central Asian invasions had their greatest influence on the sculpture, leather products, metal works, jewelry, and textiles of the period.

The Gupta age, a period of efficient ruling, political stability, and consistent patronage of arts and crafts, has been called India's classical age. Some highlights of this time are significant advancement in both art and techniques of wood and stone carving, weaving, jewelry making, and sculpture, and includes beautiful murals of Aianta. Major advances were made at this time in art and literature, but science was also coming into its own, including mathematics, astronomy, physiology, and astrology. Sculptures of metal and stone from this period represent high quality standards. The temples of Ellora, cut from rock, represent the highest standard of stone craft in India known at the time.

Development in arts and crafts shifted to the southern peninsula of India during the Medieval period. Trade and commerce based on the handicrafts of local artisans was vigorously supported by the Chola and Vijaynagara empires. This period saw the use of intricate detail carved in temples, and great importance was given to gems and jewelry. This period saw the peak of silk weaving and bronze sculpture, while in northern India Delhi Sultanate allowed wood carving, metal works, jewelry, weaving, and pottery making to flourish. Arts and science reached new heights under the patronage of the Mughal empire, with the emphasis on architecture. Painting was the hallmark under the emperors Jahangir, Shahjahan, and Akbar, while Mughal paintings influenced other regions, such as Pahari, Boondi, Kota, and more. Weaving and metallurgy flourished at this time as well, with metal working reaching several milestones during the medieval period. Evidence exists of battles fought with guns and cannons technologically advanced for the era.

We can see from the archaeological evidence the evolution of arts and crafts among civilizations of the Indus valley from 3000 B.C. to the past few hundred years. The lifestyles of the various peoples inhabiting the area reflect the integral role played by craft traditions. Handicrafts in some cases came to identify groups of people, as the caste system limited use of certain crafts to groups of people. The people confined to a certain caste were responsible for much creativity and innovation in their specific handicrafts because they relied on them for their livelihood. This contributed significantly to the prosperity of handicrafts in India. It also led to the development of new techniques in order to find ways to please the patrons.

Use Creative Crafting to Turn Your House into a Haunted House

Would your kids enjoy turning your home into a scary haunted house this Halloween? Here are some arts and crafts ideas to effect the transformation. First you need a theme, then some accessories, lighting, and sound effects.

Cemetery Theme

There are many items appropriate for a cemetery theme, including corpses, coffins, bones, and stone hedges. A cardboard box can easily be made into a scary coffin. Cut a large piece of cardboard for the cover, and paint a cross over the top of the coffin.

Stone hedges can be cut out of Styrofoam and painted gray. You can add R.I.P. with a marker or felt-tip pen (you can even add names to make your theme spookier). The sound of crunching bones can be imitated by drying bread in the oven, then placing the crumbs under an area rug. You can make almost any body part you like by stuffing latex gloves with cotton or rags. Be sure to add plenty of blood (red paint).

You can even add a realistic touch to your home dcor by filling goblets with blood and leaving them in your dining area or hallways. Purchase clear plastic cups and mix up some blood with red food coloring and water. Thicken the mixture with cornstarch until the consistency is just right.

A Pumpkin Yard Theme

Although there's nothing wrong with using real pumpkins, you don't have to. You can use oranges, tangerines, even green bell peppers; cut the same as a jack-o'-lantern and place candles inside. You can make your pumpkin yard look creepy and deserted by spreading dried leaves around the floor and on tables, hanging sticks in the porch, and placing plastic rats, eyeballs, and spiders within the mess of leaves and sticks.

No pumpkin yard would be complete without a scarecrow, and this is another good arts and crafts idea. Find an old shirt, put it on a clothes hanger, and staple the bottom of the shirt shut. Stuff it with dead grass or hay; dead branches make great scarecrow arms. Instead of a head, find (or make) a witch's hat, cut a hole for the hanger, and place it on top of the shirt. The scarecrow can then be hung over doors, windows, or any handle or molding.

No Halloween theme is complete without cobwebs all over the place. Cotton cobwebs can be spread anywhere, while washable paint can be used on windows and other hard surfaces. Make sure to spread plenty of "blood" everywhere. And to make everything eerier, replace standard light bulbs with colored ones. Orange or red work well, as does black. Lamps can also be covered with netting or cloth to produce some scary shadows.

To finish off the effect, you can easily download spooky sounds online. Choose those most appropriate for your indoor or outdoor theme, such as howling wolves, creaking doors, and screaming.

It's easy to decorate your home with Halloween arts and crafts. Just choose a theme and add some basic props, adjusting the lighting and piping in appropriate sound effects. Try to be creative and enjoy yourself!

Louis Marx Western Playsets - From Gunsmoke to Wyatt Earp

Do you aim to take a journey to the wild, wild West? The toy manufacturing firm Louis Marx and Company started making and selling its Western themed playsets in the 1950s. During this period of time, thousands of the figures were made and distributed not just in the United States but also in other countries like the United Kingdom.

Just like many toys made today, entertainment companies sought to have their numerous hit television shows and characters licensed to toy manufacturers and other companies who would then sell goods to the public like lunch boxes and the playsets made by Marx. During this time period, cowboys and the wild west were some of the usual hit themes of movies and many TV programs. Since the shows were so popular, the western toys that Marx made also gained a huge following and the popularity was phenomenal.

Among the many popular Marx Western playsets launched into the market are the Fort Apache Stockade in 1951, the Roy Rogers Ranch and Mineral City in 1952, the Wyatt Earp playset in 1959 and the Gunsmoke playset in 1960. The playsets were actually regarded by some as an extension or promotional objects that further intensified and propelled the popularity of the Western tv shows and movies that they were based upon. Manufacturing of the toys was a goldmine for Louis Marx and Company that time. In fact, aside from the popular toy soldier figures, Marx Western playsets became one of the flagship toys made and sold by the firm.

Even today, the popularity of Marx Western toys and figures is still huge. The toys enjoy a great following, although the usual purchasers' demographics have changed a bit over the years. The action figures that used to be played with by children are now regarded as collectors' items by collectors of all ages, especially older people who remember playing with them when they were kids. My dad remembers having a couple of different playsets since he's always been a fan of Western movies and tv shows.

While some collectors may simply display their collectible Western action figures and playsets in display cases to protect them, there are also many collectors who use them to make intricate and realistic looking dioramas. Since most of the figure are made from hard plastic, they are usually more than sturdy enough to be played with by adults who are still kids at heart.

Run In Procedure for Nitro Radio Control Cars

Without running in the engine and other parts of nitro radio control cars otherwise their life will become much shorter and their performance will suffer.

To run a engine in can be done two different ways. Firstly which is the simplest and safest as you are less likely to ruin your clutch by burning it out if it does not goto plan. On the second which will, if done properly will make the engine last longer but is more complicated.

So take your Nitro Car and make sure the wheels work ok by moving it back and forward, then place on something so that the wheels do not touch the ground such as a brick and complete the starting produre which you will find on the website. Make sure the fuel you use is not a cheap fuel but a decent one with a mix of around 10-20%. For best performance as with normal cars, try to break the car in with the same fuel you will be using each time you use your nitro car. You need a smooth hard surface and for radion controlled boats smooth clam water. Avoid if you can making the engine to hot or on very warm days. The car at idle should not be to high or the clutch may burn out or the con rod may snap. Lastly, make sure the breaks are not on.

When breaking in nitro cars, it is best without the body shell attached due to the fact that the air flow will keep the engine cool so the more airflow the better. You may notice the engine to drink a lot of fuel when first breaking in which is perfectly normal. The fuel is being used in a richer quantity and does wonders to assist in the parts finding their natural place and also to flush out the engine.

After a break in the glow plug may become dirt ridden so a spare before you use the car as normal is good to have as the first one may become than dirty. Always have a few in the garage, you won't go far wrong having a few spare plugs.

Break In Method One.

The car is on and at idle so now put it on the ground and with a slow speed, drive it around on a flat surface. On the first run, don't keep the engine on for more than three minutes and keep the periods short until the car has drunk 2-3 tanks of nitro fuel.

Break In Method Two

Do the same as method one but when the engine has started and is sitting at idle, hold the car off the ground and let the engine sit at idle through two or three tanks of nitro fuel. Once the engine has cooled after the first and second tank, lean the engine off as needed. Don't rev the engine on the running in method's and don't lean the engine to much or the engine will burn in and invalidate the warranty.

Also don't allow to high acceleration within Method two due to the fact that you can damage the engine severely. Once the car has idle'd, wait ten minutes for the car to cool down and also between each tank of nitro fuel. The idea of running in is to make sure the car and engine works ok so don't push it at all. Make sure you never accelerate Nitro Cars off the ground with all 4 wheels in the air otherwise the conrod can break as well as other parts of the machine.

Do bear In mind that when you run in a car, it make appear to look faulty or not work like it should but this is to be expect. Some of the symptoms are that it may stall, operate with stuttering or foul glow plugs. Bear with it and do not get disheartened. Once you have run it in enough, it will work like a dream. Most pro's call them "break-in pains". Give it a little throttle if you think the engine may stall. After a couple of tanks of nitro fuel it should be fine.

We hope this article on running in Nitro Radio Control Cars has been helpful and you enjoy the RC Car hobby.

My RC Car Does Not Move

On a RC car that has a 2 speed gear box, the larger gear wheel will have a one way bearing in the middle which assists the gearbox and spins in one direction by sitting on the gearbox but will not spin in the opposite direction.

If the air or area is cold and or dirty then you may find that the one way bearing could fail due to the great becoming cold or dirty so looses its liquidity meaning the bearing to slip. If this is the case then attempt to warm up the car and gearbox for 5 to 10 minutes by means of a small heater, hairdryer and you should find the problem goes away.

If the problem reoccurs then the first gear wheel will need to be removed and wd40 or similar applied to the bearing and shaft. Using the wd40 make sure the shaft and the centre of the one way bearing remove all grease. You can then apply fresh grease but making sure it is one way bearing grease. You will find that remove the RC cars gearbox is pretty easy but will take a little while.

To remote the gearbox, find the 4 screws underneath the chassis and remote them and then remote the screws which hold the top chassis on. The servo cable will be attached so you will not be able to remove the upper chassis but it can be moved out the way enough. You can then access the gearbox and put back in ok with enough clearway. To put the drive shafts back into the drive cups can be tedious but find some tools such as pliers to keep them out the way. Once you have cleaned the bearing, if it slips still then you may need to replace it.

Some other reasons why your rc car might not move such as -

If the brake pads are touching or to tight can cause It not to move. A lso if the car has been through water and the brakes are wet they could of expanded which stops the breaks from disengaging. You will A grub screw could of come loose which is normally connected to the drive cups, this allows the drive cup to go round so stopping the drift shaft from turning and moving the car.

A part or parts inside the differentials could of snapped or not tight enough. This area means you will need to open up the differentials and give a visual inspection to see if anything looks wrong. Have a look at the cogs, maybe they are slipping or worn out. If they are worn then they should be replaced instead of trying to fix them up and move them together more. For more information on Nitro RC Cars then see or website.

Taking A Look At The Varieties Of China Stamps

Over 100 years of triumphs, disappointments and culture can be found in stamps from China. From the original "Dragon" collection, to Mao Zedong stamps, to the $2,550 Anna Nizam Charminar stamp, you'll be dazzled by the stories told in such poignant images. Here you'll find a description of a few of the valuable and culturally significant China stamps.

Overprints of China stamps were common during the early 1900s. An overprint is the addition of text after a stamp has already been printed (usually to raise the price in relation to inflation). Because of the ever-changing economy, some stamps from that time period -- such as the Sun Yat-sen -- rose in value up into the thousands of dollars.

In November 1952, the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication released a set of four stamps to commemorate "the 35th Anniversary of the October Revolution." The October Revolution (also known as The Bolshevik Revolution) was led by Vladimir Lenin's Bolshevik party and the workers' Soviets and eventually overthrew the government, making way for the USSR. They were issued in celebration of the friendship between China and the Soviets.

The first stamp had a picture of China's Mao Zedong with Stalin on the Kremlin tower; the second one portrayed Lenin making a speech at the Second Representatives Conference of the Soviet Unions; the third one pictured a statue of Stalin standing at the Lenin Canal; the fourth showed Lenin making a speech. In 1997, a set of these stamps was sold at the Spring Auction of Jiade for $55,000 RMB.

One of them issued from the collection "To Mark the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of Jinggangshan Revolutionary Base by Chairman Mao" was recently sold at an auction in Shaghai for $1.5 Million RMB (or roughly $199,880 USD). There were originally four stamps issued, including: Chairman Mao and Lin Biao at Tian An Men, Chairman Mao and his party in Jing gang Shan, the quotation "The political power comes from guns," and another verse by Chairman Mao.

The Jianggangshan base become the birthplace of the Chinese Red Army and is often called "the cradle of the Chinese Revolution." In addition to the historical significance of these commemorative China stamps, the controversy surrounding the issuance caused an uproar. Production was canceled and specimens were called to be destroyed.

Therefore, the Jinggangshan ones never made it to circulation and only a very small number exist in the hands of private collectors. In September 1968, after the establishment of Cultural Revolution Revolutionary Committees, the Ministry of Posts issued the "All China Is Red" stamp.

It pictured a red ocean, with workers, farmers and soldiers holding "the Quotations of Chairman Mao" and cheering; at the top, a red map of China with golden letters read "All China Is Red." They were issued in Beijing for half a day before the China Atlas Press discovered that the Xisha and Nansha archipelagos were mistakenly missing from the map!

Due to its extremely limited number, the "All China Is Red" is one of the most famous rare ones in the world. Ten years ago, a post office sheet of 50 was displayed at the China Philatelic Expo in Guangzhou City and was considered a "national treasure," valued at over 10,000,000 RMB.

While there is said to be about 18 million stamp collectors in China, there are millions of members in the Chinese Philatelic Society. The government is eager to begin trade with other stamp collectors, so the stamps are readily available worldwide.

Ebay has a list of stamps from Asia and China stamps can also be found at the Chinese Philatelic Information site or ChineseStamps.org. Whether you're looking for dragons or emperors, you'll find it in China!

There are decent prices for first-time collectors. Whether you'd like to purchase postage stamps with pop culture themes as gifts or collectibles, you can find them here.

Many people buy postage stamps through legitimate catalogs to safeguard their investments and receive some sort of guarantee of authenticity. However, beginners might find it more advantageous to collect stamps online through an auction site like eBay, where bids start as low as one cent.

Trading stamps through catalogs isn't free, which is why other internet sites seem to have such an enormous selection on hand.

How to Authenticate Victorian Case Furniture Antiques

As an auctioneer, I'm often asked how do you tell if something is old?

What does the term period as it pertains to antiques?

How do I spot a fake or a reproduction?

I hope this article will clear a few things up on those issues?

What is the single thing I can do or buy that will make me the most money as a part time antiquer?

The answer to that question is the very last sentence in this article.

Period antiques: There's sometimes a lot of confusion about the term PERIOD when it comes to antiques and there shouldn't be because the term has a very clear cut meaning. The term period simply means the original era an antique was originally made throughout.

Let's take for example the Gothic Period which originated in the 12th Century and lasted throughout the 16th. So that span in History would be the actual Gothic Period.

But the Gothic Style, like so many styles throughout history was copied many times after, so a Gothic styled piece of furniture from the 1800s can be an antique, because the technical definition of an antique is anything over 100 years old, but that item cannot be a period piece. To sum up: All period items are antiques, but not all antiques are period items.

Antiques that are copies of early periods are often referred to as "revival" or in the style of etc.

The dollar value of a period piece will be many times more than it's revivalist cousins.

Often people will see something on the antiques roadshow and mistakenly say something like, "I have one of those, I never realized it was worth $15,000 dollars!" They think that the antique Chippendale Style chest of drawers they have is the same as the actual Chippendale Period Piece. After all theirs is an antique, it's been in the family for over 100 years.

It's tough sometimes when I have to tell them that what they have is certainly worth having, but it's really only worth about $300 dollars in a strong market. If the person I'm relaying this information to is a prospective client, I'd better use some tact if I want to get the estate consignment.

Bringing people around on the real value of what they have is a big part of an auctioneers job and often very difficult, especially when expectations are dashed and the value is much less than they originally thought. To be honest, some folks who just won't hear you out will often call in 2 or 3 auctioneers before they believe it.

Of course, the other side of that coin is the estate executor that thinks they were assigned to liquidate a house full of junk and it's my delight to inform them that they're actually in charge of a small fortune in antiques.(But somehow these folks aren't as hard to convince, and usually need only one auctioneer to tell them that. It's a true pleasure if that auctioneer is me! OK, well let's get this train back on track because this segment is supposed to deal with authenticating antiques. We went over the difference between a period antique and a antique, but in most cases what the average person wants to know, at least at first, is, is that the item in question really old or is it a reproduction, a fake, or a fantasy piece.

Was it made 100 years ago, or last week. While the answer to that may seem obvious, there are some pretty talented people out there churning out new antiques. Before we get into the detective work of finding out whether something is old or not. Let's look at the categories above because they are not all equal, here are the differences.

A fake: A fake can fall into a few different categories, it can be a legitimate reproduction, that someone has taken the identifying marks off of to try to pass it off as old. It can be something that was manufactured with the intent of deceiving the buyer. It can be an old item that has been altered.

A reproduction: A reproduction is something that was made to look as close to the original as possible, but is signed or otherwise marked to let the buyer know that it is not old. It's not very high on the scale of collectiblity, but its several notches above a fake, and when the original isn't obtainable, it's a nice alternative.

A Fantasy Piece: A fantasy piece is something that is made to look old, but that actual item never really existed. Let's say for example a Coca-Cola tray of which never saw production originally, but was made in the 1980s with the surface adorning a flapper models. Coke has many legitimate licensed fantasy items and they're marked with the date of manufacture.

All of 3 of these exist in almost every category of antiques, from furniture to jewelry, which brings us to the feature of this show... authenticating what you have. Authenticating an antique is very much detective work. When you have the piece in front of you there is just no better way to find out whether or not it's old than to use the simple but powerful skills of observation.

Let's begin with case furniture. That being any type of furniture that has a case or a box type main structure. Dressers, blanket chests, bookcases, chests of drawers, Secretaries, writing desks.

One of the most revealing elements of these pieces is the drawer. Pull it out carefully and inspect it all the way around. Are the runners on the bottom well worn? Have they been replaced or repaired? This would obviously indicate wear which usually indicates age.

Now look at the inside edges of the drawers are there several small overlaps of stain or finish indicating that it's been refinished a few times, or does it appear that there is no overlap of stain or an extremely faint amount, thus most likely indicating the item is in it's original finish.(Big points for this, if it is an antique item.)

Are there extra holes next to the posts for the handle pulls. If so the handles were replaced and are not original. Of course even if there are not a pair of offset holes, the handles could have been replaced with a pair that had the exact post set measurements as the original handles. The other way to tell if handles have been replaced is to look close at the finish around the handles, is there a faint outline in the finish or sub-finish from an old handle. (Again, big points for original handles and original hardware.)

Now let's have a look at the corners of the drawers, are they dovetailed? If so, this is quality construction. Are the dovetails hand-cut or machined? Hand cut would probably indicate an antique, the piece could just be hand crafted, but not very likely. More about that later. For this section, we'll assume that hand-cut dovetails indicate antiques for the sake of moving along. Hand cut dovetails usually have a very narrow tail offset by a very fat one. Machined dovetails are very uniform in construction. Most of the machined dovetails came out after the 1850s, so it is still possible for an antique to have these and many do. In fact many pieces of antique furniture were manufactured in whole or in part, in factories throughout the world.

Are the corners scalloped with dowels inside a half-circle pattern down the side in a mortise & tenon fashion. This system is usually only seen on furniture made from about 1850 to 1880 and usually country pine more than anything else.

Nailed together joints are usually on home made type furniture, or unimportant manufactured furniture. It can still be well constructed, especially when compared to today's pseudo wood anti-products, but it will never achieve the collectiblility of it's well crafted cousins.

You'll see a slot method on occasion also, this is a step above nailed joints, but below any dovetailing.

An important date for would be antiquers to remember is 1830. It's the date that many historians recognize as the breakout of the Industrial Revolution. The only true statement we can make from this is that most of what came before it was hand made, and much of what came after was not. It's not an absolute, but it's the best we can do.

Antique detecting is like crime detecting in that it's as much an art as it is a science.

So swell up and pat yourself on the other side all of you antiquers, not only are you kings & queens of the recyclable kingdom, but your an artists and scientists to boot.

Back to that drawer. So you've looked at the dovetails in the front of the drawer, but if it's dovetailed or mortised all the way around it's of better quality than those who use the method only on the front and leave the back joints to a slot method.

In a similar way, the feet or legs of a piece of case furniture will tell you the same thing. See, it was the common method to put the fancy ball and claw type feet or other fancy feet on the front, and straight feet on the back. The reason being that it often took a craftsman almost as much time to carve a great pair of feet as it would to construct the entire case, so the shortcut was to put straight legs on the back. Therefore the higher quality pieces would have the carved feet all the way around. If you've ever wondered why an auctioneer used the phrase ball & claw all the way around, that's the reason.

Now the feet, if the legs or feet are post types, they should be slightly more narrow on the very bottom due to shrinkage through the ages. There should be wear, especially on chairs, which are moved around more than other pieces of furniture. But we were talking about case furniture weren't we.

Look for signatures everywhere on the item. EVERYWHERE. With glass and china or other antiques, if there's a makers mark, it's common for the makers mark to be on the bottom, with case furniture, it could be on the bottom, the back or anywhere on the inside. I've found many pieces that were signed on the insides of drawers, bottoms of drawers, signed in pencil, carved, stamped and labeled. And unfortunately many pieces that are not signed.

Woods: The most commonly used woods were oak, elm, chestnut, walnut, pine, cherry and mahogany. Much of the early Victorian Antique stock is made from Chestnut, but nothing after that. The reason for this is a Chestnut blight that came to the US about 1908 pretty much wiped out the widespread American Chestnut tree.

Much of what is sold as Oak is actually Elm the two are so similar in grain, texture and composition. Pine is generally associated more with Primitives and country antiques. The dark wood on the elegant and very refined pieces are usually Walnut and on later pieces Mahogany. You'll find Cherry on the better pieces as well, especially where a very hard wood is needed for construction.

On many of the Victorian Oak antiques, what is often referred to as carved, is actually an applied carving, which means a portion of piece is just a section of carving that was a applied or glued. A much easier and less costly process than actually carving the surface of the item. This is the reason you'll see so many of these beautiful old oak pieces with the same frame, but a different look. That being said, some of these are actually carved and if you look close you can see the difference and should know the difference for it affects the price.

Another common method that is confused for carving is the 'pressed' look. This is when a section of a piece, usually chairs, have a design, machine pressed right into them. The chairs that adorn this method are very popular, but still, they are not carved. Probably the most valuable and famous of these chairs is a Larkin #1. Larkin co. out of Buffalo New York was a famous furniture and soap company. The company sold a great many of it's items through the Sears & Roebuck catalog at the turn of the century. At the time your could order a sideboard for about 20 dollars and a complete dining room set for just under or just over $100 dollars depending on the options.

Another style you'll see on the old country pieces or cottage pieces as they're sometimes referred to is, grain painting. This is when the wood, always pine as far as I know, is painted to simulate the grain of a more expensive and exotic wood. Grain painting a practice that was once shunned by purists is now revered for it's Folksiness. Let that be a lesson, if you go against the experts, you'll often be in front of the pack. Just make sure if your buying for resale that you haven't gone so far outside of the box that your unable to sell what you've purchased.

Here are a few tips on new, reproduction furniture.

There's a lot of fine looking furniture coming out of South Pacific countries (fine at first glance that is) that is really of very poor quality and craftsmanship. You've probably seen it.

There are lots of Chippendale copies, usually in an exotic dark finish. This is actually something called PU PU wood or some kind of foolishness. It's very brittle and practically breaks if you talk to loud next to it. I don't know how it makes it over here on the containers in one piece, but it does. I've actually seen runners break pieces just moving them before.

As I said these appear to be great until you get a close look. Be warned though, these have hand cut dovetails and are even handcrafted. I'm told this PuPu wood is actually a weed in the Philippines, and that they carve it when wet, then run it through a drying process.

Also note, the edges and ends of new furniture will be sharp and straight, old furniture will shrink and round at the edges with age.

Ultra-Shiny reproduction brass hardware on authentic antique Victorian furniture will actually bring down the price at auction. If you don't have suitable pulls for an item, your better off to leave it bare than to don that garish clink.

Victorians painted their furniture very often, but original painting was always ornamental in nature and never had a solid coat. If you've got a solid color painted Victorian piece of furniture, it was defiantly painted years later.

A 'marriage' in the antiques world is when two different parts are pieced together to make a complete unit. It used to be that this was an abomination to antiquers, but they came around to accepting it when the 'shabby chic' set started buying married pieces. Ahhh....nothing says, "I can live with that" quicker than a good healthy profit. In most cases, never plan on re-finishing a piece for re-sale. In fact if your not a pro, make that never, you just won't get your money back out of the process.

Learn 10 times more about the people in the business than you do the merchandise and your will be an antiques rock star!

Quilling a Craft From The Past Revived

Quilling acquired its name due to the tool first used, a quill. Using simple tools, long strips of paper are tightly wound and released to form complicated and complex shapes.

Quilling was considered a worthy pastime for women of good breeding in the 1700-1800's. The patterns often imitated the original ironwork of the day. Quilling, or the art of paper sculpture, is a great way to make some gifts that will be remembered for a lifetime, and there is no limit to the creative ideas you can have for patterns. Ideas can be geared for any theme; weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and can be used to adorn many different things like envelopes or boxes, scrapbooks, you name it. Quilling can also be used to decorate boxes, cards, frames, mirrors, scrapbook pages, etc. Quilling papers come in many colors and styles in addition to widths.Quilling is often done on cards but also on boxes, hats, as stand alone items and many more varieties. The creative quilling designs are perfect for rubber stamping, picture framing and scrapbooking. A few items that you will need (really pretty much ALL you need) follows:

First, you need a quilling tool of some kind to roll the paper strips on. A paper quilling tool is a metal tool with a tiny slot in one end. Second. a pack of quilling paper, which you can buy in multi color packs and sizes. Also, some white glue and hatpins or "T" pins (office supply products) or toothpicks to apply the glue. A sheet of Con-tact-brand clear adhesive-backed paper is handy and a clipboard or a 9" X 12" piece of heavy cardboard can serve as a flat work surface With just these few items, you can be on your way to quilling an idea you can find online, in books or one you have designed yourself. You can always use your hands for a technique called finger rolling. Some other tools that you will find helpful (but not required) and are probably around your house are: wax paper clear sheet protectors, to protect your work surface when gluing pieces together, cardboard, a book, styrofoam, or corkboard for a firm portable work surface scissors for cutting shapes or paper strips a small plate, bottle cap, or something that you can use to put a little bit of glue on so that your glue bottle does not dry out. A ruler will help you with keeping your lines straight or measuring your shapes to ensure they are the same size.

A damp cloth or sponge (even baby wipes) help you keep your fingers from getting glued together Tweezers are helpful to help you pick up your pieces and place them in a specific location.

A fringer tool lets you create fringed paper strips with a single touch and then turn them into fringed flowers. Tip: Glue that is not too runny and dries quickly is a bonus.

I put my good old Elmer's glue in a contact lens case. I also add a few drops of water to the glue if it becomes thick. Then you can just use the toothpick or pin to spread the glue where you need it. Question: What other things can I embellish with quilling besides scrapbooks and cards. Answer: You can do tons of stuff with your quilling... For example: you can put quilling on mats for pictures; make three dimensional free standing projects like dolls and plants (which can be kept in mini display cases similar to those used for model cars). You can embellish cakes with quilled flowers; create centerpieces for your dining room table or mantle; make special gift tags for Christmas; create placeholders for weddings or dinner parties; personalize the cover of a blank journal book; or you can even use quilling to accent different aspects of a favorite scenic picture, such as the roofs or windows of homes in a cityscape. With just few items, you can be on your way to quilling an idea you can find online, in books or one you have designed yourself. You can always use your hands for a technique called finger rolling.... This is a very

relaxing and enjoyable craft. The results can be spectacular. The cost is practically zero.

Kids Christmas Crafts - Wrapping It Up

Christmas is just around the corner and time to think of gifts for family and friends. I've always found that making gifts is so much more satisfying and enjoyable than spending lots of money so why not encourage the kids to make their own gifts? The making of kids Christmas crafts means them using their imagination and having fun, something that most kids enjoy.

There's no need to stop at making the gift -- why not make the wrapping paper too? Here you will find a few ideas on wrapping those special gifts.

Bubble Wrap Paper:

You will need bubble wrap packaging, butcher paper, tape, thick paintbrush, paint with a few drops of liquid dish wash.

Tape the bubble wrap on a flat surface. Paint the wrap in various colors. While still wet lay the butcher wrap over the bubble wrap to transfer the colors. Lift carefully and allow it to dry.

Salty Wrap:

For this you will need butcher paper, cookie cutters in Christmas shapes, glue (in a saucer or plate) and salt.

Spread the butcher paper out flat. Dip the cookie cutter into the glue and place on the paper to create a glue print. Using a spoon sprinkle the salt on the glue areas, gently move the paper to scatter the salt. Allow to dry and pour off excess salt. You can also pretty up a plain roll of foil paper this way.

Print Wrap:

Materials required: butcher paper, Christmas print stamps, cookie cutters and paint.

Stamp the paper with Christmas theme stamps and use the cookie cutters dipped in paint to make other designs.

Hand crafted gifts made with someone special in mind are always precious. What better way to display the kids Christmas crafts than wrapping them up in hand designed paper.

Sewing - Tools And History

The practice of sewing, as in using thread and needle to attach various kinds of material, has been dated to at least 20,000 years ago. Sewing is practically a universal occurrence, and the actual beginnings of it stretch back to the beginnings of history. It predates the weaving of cloth by many centuries, and was used to stitch together hides, furs, and bark for clothing and other uses.

Early sewing needles were made from bone, wood, or natural needles taken from plants as Native Americans did with the agave plant. The earliest verified sewing needles made from iron date back to the third century B.C.E. and were found in what is now Germany. Chinese archaeologists report finding a complete set of iron sewing needles and thimbles in a tomb dating from the Han Dynasty (202 BC-AD 220) in China. This is the earliest known example of a thimble in history. The thimble was developed to assist early sewers to push needles through thick hides and furs, and was first made from bone, wood, leather, sometimes glass and porcelain. Later thimbles began to be made from metal, and before the 18th century dimples in a thimble had to be punched into it by hand. The thimble also became an object of beauty with thimbles made from precious and semi-precious stones, and precious metals.

The first thread was made from plant fibers and animal sinew, which was used to sew together hides and furs for clothing, blankets and shelter. Later it was found that fibers from plants and animals could be spun together to make thread. The ancient Egyptians made thread by spinning these fibers together, and devised methods of dying the thread using berries and plant matter. In China and Japan, silk fibers taken from the cocoon of the silk worm was spun to make very fine thread.

For most of the history of sewing, it was done by hand. From the simplest stitches to ornate decorative work was done with a needle, thread and a steady hand. It remained so until the first patent for a machine that "emulated hand sewing" in 1790 in England. It is not known whether there ever was a machine built from the 1790 patent.

The first functioning sewing machine was issued a patent to Barthelemy Thimonnier in France in 1830. It used a single thread and a hooked needle to make a chain stitch similar to the one used in hand embroidery. The inventor was nearly killed when enraged French tailors rioted and burned down his garment factory because they feared the machine would cause unemployment. In 1846 the American Elias Howe was issued a patent for his machine, but the mass production of the machines did not happen until the 1850's when Isaac Singer built the first truly successful sewing machine. With needle, thread, thimble and machine, the art and craft of it has not only formed items for our use and comfort. Sewing has helped form civilization itself.

How To Select Your First Electric RC Air Plane

Things to think about:

Where can you fly? You want a nice big field. Insuring it is mainly free of trees, wires, and people. You don't want obstructions.

Plane selection. To select the size of your plane consider these points. The larger your plane is the larger the area you need to fly in unless it is very light. A good size plane for a baseball field size area is about 28" wingspan, a good weight is less than 14 oz flying weight. You want a plane that has enough power to loop or at least maneuver without stalling easily. This is known as a "Tip Stall ". This is when your airspeed from a turn or climb overcomes the ability of the plane.

The lighter planes have a lower stall speeds. Light weight is good except in wind over 10 mph. Check the weather sites for hourly wind , usually flying in the morning or evening is better because the winds are usually lighter.

Landing Gear is a nice option, but for beginners I would remove them. You will find when you fly into a tree I will just about guarantee the landing gear will get caught and will make it very difficult to remove it for the tree.

If you want to build your first plane build a simple kit that is inexpensive but proven. I learned on a foam delta wing. This is not the best choice but I later found that I could buy foam from the big Home supply center and make my own delta planes easily.

Pay attention to the balance point of your plane also known as the "CG". If your nose of the plane is too heavy it will always want to fly into the ground. When the tail is too heavy it will over steer on up and down control or porpoise.

Foam planes are a nice choice; they will take abuse and can be repaired with foam safe glue or my favorite choice, Hot Glue.

Brushless Motors give you about 2X the power of the same weight Brush Type Motor and can be about the same price. You must use a brushless ESC (electronic speed control) with a brushless motor.

Lithium batteries are also half the weight is NiCad's, but must be respected in maintenance and recharging as they can cause a nasty fire. They are generally safe but a mistake can cause you big trouble.

Lithium chargers are required for charging lithium batteries and may cost you a few dollars but is a good investment.

As with anything there are many, many reasons a person might consider to begin collecting antique clocks: maybe one has been inherited to them and the desire for more like it has been bred, perhaps someone has found a way to speculate and profit from them, or it could be that a person has simply fallen in love with them and cannot get enough of them.

Some will collect mantle clocks or grandfather clocks. Maybe you like the look of only oak clocks or walnut clocks or those made out of early plastics.

Of course, there is always the antique clocks of a certain time period. If you're just starting out maybe you'll want to start with those that were made in the 1920s or even break up a little further: from the 1920s and from a United States based clock maker. Different Types of Embroidery and Cross Stitch Needles

There are many different types of needles to use in embroidery and cross stitching. Quality and size vary greatly, so try several different needles to find which one you are the most comfortable using. To help you get started, I have written up some basics to keep in mind when choosing which needles to use and when to use them.

Types of needles:

The most common needle used in cross stitching is an embroidery or tapestry needle. Other needles exist, such as beading, chenille, quilting, and milliners needles, and each type has a specific use. Here is a brief description of each type of needle.

  • Tapestry needles - They have a blunt point, which pushes aside evenweave fabrics instead of piercing them, and a large eye to accommodate several strands of thread.

  • Embroidery needles - Much like a tapestry needle, except that the tip is sharper, the needle is thinner and the eye is smaller than a tapestry needle. They are easier to use in cross stitching when you are doing French knots, as the needle is able to pierce the fabric easier than tapestry needles.

  • Petite tapestry needles - Are shorter in length than tapestry needles, which makes stitching faster since there is less of a needle to pull through the fabric with each stitch.

  • Double-eye tapestry needles - Are needles with two eyes and are especially useful when using different types of floss or two or more colours (known as blending colours).

  • Beading needles - Are used for adding beads. The needles are long and thin because tapestry needles are usually too large to add beads to cross stitch projects.

  • Chenille needles - Are used in ribbon embroidery because they have a long eye and sharp points.

  • Quilting needles - Are quite short and have a small, round eye and a sharp point. They are perfect to do short stitches quickly and precisely.

  • Milliners needles - Are the best needles to use when doing French and Bullion knots. They are very long, with small round eyes, as opposed to the long oval eyes of a tapestry needle.
  • Quality:

Look for high quality needles and threads, as this will make for a more enjoyable stitching experience and produce a higher quality finish. Poor quality needles are harder to thread because they have a rough eye that will actually pull and fray your thread. Poor quality thread will fray easily, making it hard to thread through the needle and giving your finished piece a fuzzy appearance.

    Different needle sizes:

On higher count fabric, you need a smaller sized needle. Kind in mind that the larger the number size of the needle is, the smaller the actual needle will be. For example, a size 26 tapestry needle is smaller than a size 24 tapestry needle. The higher the count of the fabric, the smaller the holes in the fabric, therefore you will need a smaller needle. As a guideline, use a size 24 tapestry needle for stitching on an 11 or 14 fabric count; use a size 26 for fabric with a fabric count of 18 or greater.

The Cardinal Bird Feeder - What Works Best?

The intention of a cardinal bird feeder, of course, would be to attract the cardinal. This bird, of course, is probably the single most popular bird for backyard bird watchers. However, to the dismay of many, there really is no cardinal feeder per se. But, the bird certainly has both feeder and seed preferences. Let's take a look!

First, what doesn't work that well.

The tube feeder is quite popular. However, don't make the mistake of thinking it a favorite of the cardinal. I've been watching birds for years and years and I can tell you with complete certainty that this is not your best choice for the cardinal. He has virtually no neck and is forced to turn his whole body sideways to eat from a tube. In addition, he's just a smidgen too big for most perches.

Some people will advise you to add a tray to the bottom. Granted, you will see the bird more often if you do this. Just keep in mind that Droll Yankees trays fit Droll Yankees tube feeders; Aspects trays fit Aspects tube feeders; Bird Quest trays fit Bird Quest tube feeders.

Do you know which brand you have?

Also, keep in mind that trays attract lots of other birds like grackles and starlings. If these birds visit your tube feeder, you won't see many cardinals (or any other birds for that matter). Keep in mind the purpose of a tube feeder is to provide for small birds like the tufted titmouse and Carolina chickadee.

Add a tray, in come the medium and large birds, away go the small birds-just like that, you've defeated the purpose of the tube.

    So what does work?

A proper cardinal bird feeder is any feeder whose design accommodates the cardinal's preference to "bend at the hip" or not at all when feeding. You want a feeder that doesn't force the bird to turn its body. A basic hopper feeder is a great choice as a cardinal bird feeder. So is any fly-thru bird feeder (a fly-thru feeder is open on all sides and has ample space). Also, platform feeders on the ground are ideal cardinal feeders.

There are manufacturers of feeders who describe their product as "cardinal feeder." The no-no is one such example. Though this feeder does accommodate the cardinal, be careful! Many bird feeders do not do what the manufacturer claims.

The Droll Yankees squirrel proof feeder called the whipper is designed to be a cardinal feeder. The curved perch is a fantastic innovation that accommodates the bird perfectly. The Brome Care "squirrel buster" squirrel proof feeder, with its detachable ring, also serves the bird, though the bird does not appear as comfortable on this feeder as he does on the whipper (make no mistake, though, the Brome Care Product is equal and even superior to the Droll Yankees product in many ways).

    Seed

What seed should you feed the cardinal? Hands down, safflower. This is a bitter tasting seed that squirrels, grackles and starlings tend not to eat.

If you don't have these pests floating around, any quality bird seed will do. Black oil sunflower seed and sunflower hearts (chips) are favorites of the cardinal. He'll eat most blends, too but don't use big box blends--they're full of filler that birds don't eat.

I've seen cardinals eat fruit--you'll need a fruit feeder for this.

So, what is my favorite cardinal bird feeder?

You know, my advise to bird watchers desiring to attract cardinals to "get back to basics." I recommend either a wooden hopper feeder or a fly-thru platform feeder serve as their cardinal bird feeder.

If you follow this advise and are patient, I promise that you'll be visited by this beautiful bird year round!

Stamp Collecting Still Going Strong In the 21st Century

Over the years many people thought that stamp collecting would never last. Boy, were they ever wrong. In fact it's one of the more popular hobbies throughout the world and boasting collectors in every country in the world. Stamps are still used today and will be for a very long time. This makes collecting them to continue to grow even in bad economic times. Stamp collecting has grown and is divided in many different segments. Their use to be a time where only certain things were collected but that has really expanded a lot. Every day it seems they add something new to collect. It doesn't look to end anytime soon either. Let's look at some of those.

First let's learn a little background about stamp collecting before we go any further. Condition is king in most any collectibles and stamps are no different. The come in conditions from mint to good condition which determine value. These are just one of the factors in determining how much they are worth. The other thing is if the item has been used or is unused. Used means it has been used on postage while unused hasn't. Unused will almost be worth many more dollars and are collected more than any other type of stamp and that won't change anytime soon either.

Over the years collecting stamps can be divided into many different classifications. One of the most popular ones is collecting stamps from someone's country. Everyone loves their home country and having a piece of its history is basically one of the things that postage stamps give you. Each one has a little story behind it and you would be surprised at how many people know the stories behind the stamps that they collect. Presidential and heads of state are another important collecting interest among collectors. It seems that people have a love affair with authority figures and that could have something to do with it. Other really popular collecting subjects are animals, sports, vehicles, transportation.

Stamp collecting has had its ups and downs in recent years as getting younger collectors interested in the hobby has been tough. This doesn't mean the hobby hasn't been growing, because it has. Many countries are now gearing promotions and stamps more to kids so they can try and bring them into stamp collecting. It's slowing make progress, but it's going to take some time. Education is probably the key to this kind of program working as the more information made to the masses can only mean more people for the hobby.

Investing in stamps is something that people have also been doing over the years with great success. Just like most other hobbies production of stamps is limited to a certain amount and once they are gone that is it. This means the values on rare or hard to find items will continue to rise. These make stamps ideal investments for people willing to hold them for a few years. Stamp collecting is a lot of fun and the more people find out about it the more they like it. In the end isn't that what a hobby should be fun.

Tis The Season For Organizing Your Very Own Craft Party

I know you don't want to hear this but the holiday season is coming up quickly. This time of year is synonymous with parties and get-togethers. The best parties are the ones that combine fun with frugality and spark a renewed interest in sharing joy with friends and family.

As this holiday party season swiftly approaches, everyone becomes overwhelmed with demands on both their time and their bank accounts. Creating a party where family and friends can come together, work on some gifts, and enjoy themselves is becoming increasingly trendy. It showcases your creativity and initiative.

These kinds of parties are perfect venues for sharing and spreading holiday cheer. Guests can bring in culinary masterpieces for a holiday food basket to give to the local food pantry. Guests can also bring in ornaments and decorations to create whatever craft they want to send abroad to soldiers bringing them some much deserved holiday cheer.

    • Before you begin planning everything you'll need or buy, find a date that works for everyone. Choose one early in the holiday season before everybody gets booked up with other parties. Plan it as an all-day event so people can drop in and out as they attend other holiday functions.
    • Write out your invitations and send them out about a month in advance. Get your guests involved in the party by asking them to bring items which can be used for wreath making like acorns or evergreen branches. You can also ask them to bring a special holiday dish to be served to other party guests.
    • Make a small list of all the different projects you want to make. Buy some home and craft magazines for a few different ideas. You can also visit some similar themed websites such as The Fruit Company or Martha Stewart's site. I'm sure you'll find a few different ideas that can catch your eye.
    • Have a budget for how much you want to spend on materials, ingredients and decorations. The budget should be based on the projected head count. If you're worried about money or lack thereof possibly being a problem, on the invitation ask for monetary donations to the party cause along the lines of $20 or so.
    • Start buying all of your supplies and materials you'll need a few months in advance. This way you can take advantage of any sales or other good deals. Check off all the items on your supply list as you find them.
    • When you are setting up everything for the party, create a few different stations for each one of the projects. Set up these stations in various areas of the hall or room in order to give all your guests enough room to work. Make sure each of the work areas has enough materials and supplies like scissors and glue guns.

    • Design your gifts to be one of a kind. Use handmade and personally designed gift tags. One more way to make your gifts unique is to use digital photos of friends and family or even of the finished project and add a personal message inside as a final touch.

Long Stitch - The Beginner's Dream Stitch

Have you ever wanted to learn needlework, but do not know where and how to start? If you are interested in needle crafts, you probably have visited a variety of Web sites dealing with the subject. Or, you may have considered the matter in a traditional way, through your local library and the bookstore. There are many sources available on the subject. You probably swept through information resources and found, literally, hundreds of items listed. Does this cause you to panic? Stay calm, help is on the way. For the beginner, I have always recommended Long Stitch as a point to learn to needle. The Long Stitch, a family member Straight Stitch is, as I stated in the title of this article, beginning the dream of sewing. The reason for this sewing is so easy to learn, is good, because it is a SIMPLE couture. The sewing is exactly what the two names imply. It is a long and straight seam. There are no loops of this item, you will not need to worry about passage of the sewing. The stitch is worked from the bottom up. Simply bring the needle and yarn across the canvas, go right above the canvas specified number of threads and bring the needle through the fabric. You can not really get easier! Another added advantage to work with not only the assembly long, but any sewing straight is the lack of canvas distortion. Because mesh lines are worked vertically or horizontally, there is no benefit diagonally, the leading cause of the deformity of canvas, as is common with diagonal cross and stitches. There are two basic rules to keep in mind when you work on a long sewing project. Rule number one: Do not create items that are too long. A seam that is too long and sometimes hic break. If you put time and effort into a project needle, do you really want to worry about it further ahead at some point in the future? That is a preposterous question, nobody wants. It is a good idea to keep your stitches to no more than eight or ten sons canvas long. This number is based on 10 mesh (gauge) canvas. If you work on canvas of a smaller mesh, for example, 12 mesh or 18 stitches, the mesh can be working on a larger number of threads. Rule number two: Maintaining a common thread tension throughout the project. The wire should be tight but not tight enough to cause canvas fold. To help achieve this goal, a framework must always be used for projects long sewing. By loading your project over a period of four under way, you will be able to keep the canvas tension in all four directions. A scroll is strongly recommended for this purpose. Long Stitch projects are available in the form of kits. With a kit, you get the design already printed on the canvas, the more the amount of wire you will need to work on the project. Recently, I noticed a decrease in the number of available packages feature long as sewing. I do not know why it is so. Fortunately, I have my own project design. Many of them are long lines and other sewing stitches. I found long seam to be excellent for work like wrinkles details in a face or fur of a dog and cat. The point of a long stitch and ends another begins will create a separate line, thus creating the ride in the face or line fur of a dog or cat. For an example of what can be achieved with this versatile sewing, go to the page containing a Stitchopedia.com FREE LONG STITCH design entitled, Boris, Boxer (It is a dog, not an athlete). Regardless of which item or items that you choose to learn first, needle can become a lifetime hobby. Some people may even call it an addiction. Hobby or drug use, needle, long sewing in particular, gave me many hours of relaxation of creativity and imagination. Hopefully, it will do the same for you.

What is the difference between sublimation and a press of this method? Technically, the answer is that the sublimation permeates the surface of the average, while heat transfer applies some, but not all of the ink on equipment while leaving the paper. Thus, we see the sublimation hard on the materials used as well as synthetic fabrics such as fingerprint on coffee mugs, license plates or printing on 100% polyester shirts. What types are the easiest to work with beginners? There are three main types of heat transfer: (1) Plastisol transfers; (2) Transfers Made with color copiers (3) The transfers made with Ink- Jet transfer paper. Well, I finally decided to broaden the experience and my son have finished my first project using a hand dyed fiber yarns Twisted Sisters. Twisted Sisters Yarn has been around for over ten years. I had heard of them and even on their part, have found themselves faced with fiber craft fairs and dyed yarn stores, but I never thought to use their sons. The book was loaned to me by my sister, who was in his hand knitting yarn dyed for years - and then I was fascinated by it, so much so that I went out and I bought my own copy. Reading the sock kitchen was a revelation for me. First, I appreciated the tone of how it because they are not-instead of lectures you learn about the enthusiasm and love for the author of the dyed yarn hand. Page by page, you learn to dive dyeing, dyeing pay, painting and hand yarn. The photographs and text that you just show how easy it can be hand dyeing. But the book goes even further. It shows you explain the different ways of spinning yarn and how it affects the appearance and color of yarn. Again, the book explains the step-by-step process to make the perfect sock-in fact, the book is the best explanation of the heel knitting a sock that I have ever read. Well, I read the book cover to cover, so it only remained for me to knitting a sock using a hand-dyed yarn. Naturally, I chose Twisted Sisters son. I could choose a different brand on the part of dyed yarn-since I discovered others like Rio de la Plata Yarn and Artyarns yarn, but I felt it kind of fitting to use Twisted Sisters for my son first venture into the use of hand-dyed yarn. The son I chose was Daktari son. It is a cotton fiber, which makes it perfect for socks. Daktari fiber is a hand-painted yarns nuances nearly solid (monochromatic variegates). Each color just seems to flow into the color of its neighbor. I simply fell in love with this thread. Anyway, I used 2 balls 50g to make use of socks US size 8 needles. I made socks before, but I was not aware of the immense variety of forms. In the end, I went with a model "afterthought heels." I was very pleased with the way the socks proved they have fully equipped with the tips that I found in the book. They expect a lot Twisted Sisters and son, I chose was perfect, even if I say it myself. I used since the other hand dyed yarns of companies like Rio de la Plata Yarn and Artyarns yarn, but I 'II never forget my first project using hand-dyed fiber. One of the biggest things about the world is that the collection of coins You can start very modestly and not spend a lot of money to get involved. In general, many American coins have come to be very high. Collector mature and solid foundation for the market for American coins has led to some dramatic appreciation in recent years and the price level remains high. In the American market, the more you are a collector could target for his collection contained in a small single book of 400 pages known as the Red Book. That leads to severe competition among the crowd of American collectors for a target group of relatively small parts. With all American collectors focusing on a group of items contained in a 400 pages, it is not surprising that prices are If high. Conversely, the worldwide standard catalog of coins comes in so many configurations, and there are thousands and thousands of pages covering parts of the world market. The market is a little thinner for the world except for coins and the well-known classic rarities, prices are still very reasonable to downright cheap in many areas. As most of these shops specializing in American coins, there are often opportunities to be found. One of my favorite stores has a giant bargain bin where most foreign coins are dumped and sold for 10 cents. Now, the concessionaire is not allowing any gold, but it occasionally, I find it very beautiful pieces of silver and a few relatively early World coins. From time to time, some parts very good end in these bins to negotiate when the concessionaire is not knowledgeable enough to recognize the value of the coin. That's where your excellent education in the study of works of reference should really pay off. Once you learn the basics and get some expertise, you will be surprised how often you can pick up a coin for groundnuts, which could be several hundred dollars or more. Anyway, to a 10 cents bargain bin, how can you go wrong? So, check local stores because there are exotic and exciting just waiting for you. Ebay is also an excellent place to pick up some great currency. Of course, there is more competition, but things are still falling through the cracks. I can personally attest to the purchase of items on Ebay often (and sometimes other sites auction) who sell too cheap. These negotiated purchases can be added to the collection, or if they really do not fit, they can be sold at a profit, providing more funds for the continuation of your coins more relevant for the collection of your interest. Coin collecting world is too big for kids! My daughter has her own collection as it acquires a coin, it inevitably leads to conversations about the country in which he finds himself, and perhaps a bit of history. Then, we are going to reference books for search. This is a tremendous way to generate interest for a child in the fields of geography, history, politics and sociology. Many children (and adults) eyes light up as they think of a coin newly acquired from an exotic land far and make its journey through the years and in the palm of your hand. How to Collect ? One of the first decisions to make when finally ready to build a beautiful collection is exactly what to collect. Many begin with the acquisition of their parts in a somewhat haphazard manor, whatever they see that they like, they pick it up and added to the collection. This is actually a very useful exercise in the early stages of collecting coins. It allows the collector to experience a wide variety of types and parts and before you know it, there will be some issues that tend to block the collection of attention and interest above all others . Often, one of these topics of interest will evolve into an area of expertise for collectors. Most serious collectors will eventually find their niche beloved, and the area where they will focus their research, study and collection efforts. The World collector coins will then pursue the goal of completing a collection in their field of specialization. In some regions, this could be achieved in a relatively short period of time. For others, it may be so difficult to prove a life journey in the pursuit of the completion of the finest collection. Listed below are some topics and gather ideas for the World Coin Collector. This list is far from exhaustive, as there are themes and countless niches that can attract a gathering interest. Collect Some themes and areas of specialization Collection metal content Large Copper Coins Gold Coins Nickel Coins Silver Coins Platinum Coins Palladium Parts Bi-Metal parts Crowns (Silver Dollar large pieces) aluminum Collecting theme, also known as Topical Collecting Flower Coins (can even restrict a type of flower) / p>

    Amateur Astronomy

Let us not confuse astrology with astronomy; "astrology" is not the same as astronomy day. It is the oldest skills. ( "Astronomy" From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). But at all levels, the study of the sky. This is an effort to understand the makeup and history of the cosmos. It is our tool for unlocking that learning. It is a wonderful hobby that is enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. It is the largest and oldest of all leisure time. Amateur Astronomy is exposed to more people individually, is less likely to be discouraged by the need to learn how to locate objects in the night sky before you can see them. Some magazines and periodicals are printed boards of activities relating to amateur astronomers around the world. They are supported user publications. Amateur Astronomy is practiced as a hobby. It is often a pleasure because it could be a way to act scientifically. It is, as it turns out, a hobby to share. It is changing and we must expand our understanding of the changes so that we can make improvements as soon as they are available and fit our needs. It is the study of planets, stars, galaxies and the universe as a whole, how they originate and how they change over time. This is an observation, not an experimental skills. Hidden Value in Coin Collecting

In the world of numismatics, is a coin of value only to the extent that someone wants. I cents Lincoln common that I would not party. Whether the call historic, or perhaps simply beautiful toning is a value that makes a collector in the first place. A collector's item empirical method is "the piece that you did not pick up one you need." The fact is, you just never know. Recently, in a forum of the Internet medal, I came to a question from a collector who thought he had a hundred Lincoln Memorial he lacked representation from Lincoln on the reverse. A picture of the piece has been recorded and it inspired numerous comments from other members of the forum. Most of the comments seemed to be focused on the value of the coin and how its disposal should be handled. Chefs calm prevailed and convinced the owner of the piece that what he was really looking at is the result of wear die. The harsh reality is that the piece is possessed of the value, but not in terms of dollars and cents. And who does not know that feeling. I am the last bubble bust anyone, but unfortunately most of the various mistakes are not considered as rare or precious. There are exceptions and it is perhaps what he had hoped. But as a coin collector, I knew there must be a cloud of money somewhere in its finding. So I responded to his post by stressing the hidden value in this room. The rules in the collection of coins are very simple. There is none. Coin collecting is more than making a buck. For some, it is the challenge of acquiring pieces of historical value numismatics. I urge all the serious collector to invest in high-quality parts that have significant potential returns. If you see a piece that you want to collect. I have a lot of beautiful examples of items that I have collected solely because of the eye appeal. But for most collectors, the coins to invest in the future of profit is a burner bad feelings. Collectors collect typical I know what they want. The emotion will always remain in the search, the hunt and of the acquisition. And I have always promoted. While I have great adviser convey to the owner of the room for error? In the simplest terms, I suggested he meet a comprehensive set of the error in each year of production. Beginning from 1959 to today. was not only a challenge to anyone who has read the forum presented, but also the spark to enjoy collecting coins in the simplest form. A comprehensive collection of this variety is not only enviable, but one of the people and the monetary value. And a collection of this kind is feasible. To the reader, this advice could apply to all aspects of collection. For the moment, I am assembling a memorial project obverse die cent of cracks. It began with three beautiful examples found in the days of each other. And I had nothing in my personal collection or business inventory. So, the hunt is on. So before you throw this piece in a jar or hand it over to a clerk, take a moment and think. You will be happy that you did.

    Autograph Collecting non-Identify Authentic Autographs

last week, I was going through my autograph research files and I met my file of education. "The education of file is a file full of most of my major mistakes and buying So named because every time I made a mistake, I learned -- the hard way. It contains false, autopen facsimile signatures and printed. At the time of purchase, I thought they were authentic. Most of them were acquired in my first years as a broker, but there are a few recent entries. I am not sure, but there's a good chance that I could have taken that "education and money to pay for medical school. hopefully save you from the heavy investment in your education autograph, "I have described some of the very common, non-real items you can find in your hunt for autographs, that they are at flea markets, garage sales, or other collectors. The first rule to remember: Assume that this is not true until proven otherwise. We all want to believe that we made a great find. It is in our nature to discover a treasure for a fraction of the real price. Think first. Not only do you need a keen eye, but you need a clear head. several times, I saw an article in a paper show or flea market and a belief that I found a real bargain that I forgot to look at it and make sure that all points of authenticity. Therefore, save time, money and frustration. Suppose it is not true -- then inspect closely to see if it is. Perhaps the most common false signatures, some are in the form of printed letters, signatures and photos. There are more engravings with their hands as there are snowflakes in Alaska. Virtually all of these signatures are printed. You need to look at them very almost, even under a magnifying glass. dead Several factors are gifts signing a print-ink color is identical to the ink in printmaking, etched lines can be seen in the signature, the intensity of the ink through uniform signature. Now, you can still want to believe that is true -- and you may be correct, but if I saw all these characteristics of a signature at the bottom of a burning, I would certainly go through it . Sometimes stamped or etched documents contain the signatures of famous people. In the case of many presidential appointments Postal, there can be a real signature of a Postmaster General and a steel engraved or stamped signature of the President. Calvin Coolidge postal appointments are famous for that. There are many letters printed very often that you can discover in your search for autographs: Harry Truman sent a letter printed shortly after he left office to thousands of people. Herbert Hoover sent a printed 3x5 card thanking writers for their kind birthday wishes. Letters and notes, without a personalized greeting or salutation are indications of non-authentic . letters printed Other famous include Winston Churchill's birthday letter of thanks, King George's letter dated 1918 to the "soldiers of the United States ..." And a large number of cards sent to the White House. another area of the emotion and disappointment is the discovery of the Presidential Land Grants. several thousand hectares of land have been transferred as payment for services rendered to the American administration. Virtually all land grants after Jackson been signed by the President of the secretary and not the President. How can you tell the difference? Examine the signature of the secretary and the president. do they look? In most cases, the similarity to the ink, calligraphy, and style reveals the truth. But beware of James Buchanan earth. his secretary took great care to try to imitate the signature of the President. presidential study So those signatures closely! Autopens are a modern technological tool and a headache for autograph collectors. an autopen can reproduce an exact copy of the signature of a person thousands of times. And it is being done with a real pen in his hand. Each signature it is identical to the previous one. Be careful. You need some examples of autopen signatures to determine whether the signature in question is an autopen. I usually put a signature on one another and both lay on my light table. align them and see if they correspond. If it is an exact match, it is an autopen. But remember that some VIPs have more than one autopen trend, if you need everyone to be safe. Other characteristics of an autopen signature: a pen same pressure throughout the signature, a drawn look, or a notable minute wiggle or shake to the opportunity. There simply is not enough space in this article to cover the truth. There are some excellent forgery and other very poor attempts. Avoiding false happens through the purchase material from a reputable. Dealership ensures that the material in the life of this issue is important, but make sure they will be around to make good on the guarantee, if the need is in fact felt. If you want to be a good detective autograph, you need to study, study and study some more. Your library should contain as many books, references and articles you can find . Subscribe to magazines and catalogs autograph. Stay abreast of autopens, forgeries and new discoveries on authentic materials. With careful examination and observation, you can keep the cost of your education dossier ' at least.

    2. Allow to dry properly shirt and iron it lightly to remove wrinkles all the hardware.
    3. Draw a design on the front of the shirt, using water light blue erasable pen. I chose the imprint of a lion ~ but any other model can be used.
    4. Add a few leaves of clean white paper between the front and rear parts of the shirt, so that the paint does not stain on the back of the shirt.
    5. Paint the largest footprint Brown with fabric paint. Use the paint in undiluted form.
    6. Allow the paint to dry completely before proceeding to the next stage of the project.

Collecting Marx Toy Soldiers, Action Figures and Playsets - Classic Toys from Louis Marx and Company

Do an instant survey about things collectors usually collect, and for sure, you would come up with a list that would include toy soldiers and playsets from toy manufacturer, Louis Marx and Company. No wonder about it. Collecting Marx action figures is one of the most popular hobbies and past times of some people, especially those men who spent their childhood years playing with Marx toys.

If little girls were so fond of their Barbie dolls and their mini-kitchen playsets, little boys back in the day were into playing with toy soldiers made by Marx. To some, the action toys are trademarks of being a boy, underlining adventuring, bravery and extreme physical abilities.

It would be noteworthy to know the origin of Marx action figures. To begin with, the toy soldiers were designed and manufactured by toy maker Louis Marx and Company. The firm was one of the oldest toy companies and was primed to become the world's largest toy manufacturer in the 1950s. Louis Marx was the man behind the company and the toy soldiers, action figures and playsets. He was a United States-born toy assembler who had been into toy making since his youth. He started his career by working as staff, and later as a manager, at Ferdinand Strauss, a maker of mechanical toys.

Louis entered the US Army as a private soldier in 1918. Two years after, he resumed private citizenship and revived his career in toy making. Louis was so attached to his military life that he named all his sons from the names of the generals he knew. He later proceeded to establish Louis Marx and Company and made a mark by having his own trademark figures.

In the 1930s to early 1940s, the toys were made of metal alloys. But because the onset of World War II prompted the US and European countries to spare metal reserves to give way to the manufacturing of military weapons, plastic versions of the action figures started entering the market in the late 1940s.

Collecting Marx action figures certainly is one of the most interesting and worthwhile hobbies people can do today. Though the action toys can be considered novelty objects nowadays, they surely are still hot collectibles. Some say that people would never grow tired of the toy soldiers and playsets as long as there is always thrilling battles to be waged between the forces of good and evil.
